ROSA Desktop R1 GNOME is the edition of the R line of desktop distributions from ROSA Laboratory that uses the GNOME 3 desktop environment. The beta edition that was supposed to be a Release Candidate was made available for download earlier today.

It is one of many Python applications that expert and aspiring data scientists may use to mess with data. Orange is cross-platform, but because there are no installation binaries for GNU/Linux distributions, installing it on your favorite distribution entails building it from source.

The rest of this article shows how to build and install it from the downloaded source code.

But I found out while testing the main edition of Fedora 19 that it is far from a traditional desktop interface. That it is more like a hybrid desktop interface – a fusion of what could be considered a traditional desktop interface and the GNOME Shell.

The hostname defaults to localhost. If you are logged in, you can verify that by typing hostname at a shell terminal, or clicking the Details module in System Settings, where the hostname should be listed in the Device name field.

There are any number of such repos that you can enable. The recommended ones to install are RPM Fusion and rpm.livna.org. The latter is complementary to the former, shipping only those applications that, for one reason or another, are not available in RPM Fusion.

The very first edition of what is now called StartOS were based on Ubuntu, but the distribution has since dumped Ubuntu to become one that is not based on any other distribution. In other words, it is now an original or independent distribution, with its own package management system.

But while it does not have its own Fedora 19 installation image, you can run a Cinnamon desktop on Fedora 19 by installing the cinnamon package either from the command-line or from Apper, the graphical package manager.

Since Anaconda, the Fedora system installer, no longer has an upgrade option, FedUp is the recommended method for upgrading from Fedora 17 onwards. Fedora-upgrade is just another method, which works just as well (on the systems that I tested it on) as FedUp.

This article is a review of the Cinnamon edition, and starts by taking a look at the installation program. Keep in mind that all Linux Mint editions share the same installation program, so everything that’s written here for the Cinnamon edition also applies to the MATE edition. And also to the KDE and Xfce editions, though the final editions of those are yet to be released.

The Slate 7 is a 7-inch, Android tablet that could be had for US $169.00, but don’t expect that kind of price for the Slate 21 when it hits a store shelf near you. However, at an expected price just below US $400.00, the Slate 21 won’t be that much more expensive, considering what it brings to the table.

Unfortunately, some of those tweakings have to be carried out at the command-line. But they are all easy to accomplish, so don’t panic, if you are not very comfortable at the Linux command-line. In this article, the few steps you can take to make a default installation of Linux Deepin 12.12 more secure and user-friendly are presented.

The good news is they are comparatively minor bugs, nothing that cannot be fixed before the next public release. However, what’s not a bug is not requesting authentication for using graphical management applications. That’s a bad design implementation that needs to be rolled back, for security’s sake.
