Being the kind of technical person you are, you most likely identify with the old-time hacker ethic and disdain the popular use of the word"hacker" when"cracker" would be more apropos. ...

BitKeeper and Linux: The end of the road?
BitKeeper, the proprietary source management tool used by Linus Torvalds and other Linux kernel hackers to apply patches to their versions of the kernel, is once again at the center of controversy. This time it looks as if the relationship between Bitkeeper and the poster-child project for free software is going to come to an end as the result of irreconcilable differences. NewsForge has spoken with the three primary figures involved in the dispute -- Larry McEvoy, Linus Torvalds, and Andrew "Tridge" Tridgell -- to learn what happened and whether or not it could have been avoided.
Making a plastic texture with The GIMP
I got the idea for this project during a visit to a jewelry art exhibition. The artwork on display incorporated an amazing range of unconventional media, including rusted iron, precious stones and metals, wood, plastic, and the like. One of the most interesting creations among the "wearable art pieces" was a plastic object with a satin finish. I liked this satin effect so much that I decided to re-create it as a graphic material using the GIMP.

Google, Firefox offerings shame Microsoft
The week's most noticed giveaway was Google's addition of spy satellite images, which show nearly every address in the United States, to its map address-finding service. Even better was Firefox's new Scrapbook extension. A constant torrent of these new powerful tools stands naked as a lighthouse in a computer industry where innovation languishes like the cash building up in Microsoft's corporate treasury from continuing sales of the same old stuff.

The second annual Open Source Business Conference, held Tuesday and Wednesday in San Francisco, focused on new business strategies for open source software (OSS) vendors, but also on what end-user businesses should do to avoid becoming targets for lawsuits like those filed by SCO against Novell, AutoZone and DaimlerChrysler for using Linux distributions that SCO claims contain its proprietary code.
