Unity Video Mockup: Better Menus, Social Networking Widget Layer

Frederico Araújo Mendes has created a very interesting Unity mockup (video) in which he proposes better menus and a social networking widget layer.

Kupfer is a quick launcher like Gnome DO or Synapse. Kupfer exists for quite a long time and thanks to this, it comes with a huge list of plugins: you can use it to quickly access any browser's bookmarks, control Empathy or Pidgin, Evolution, Thunderbird, Google Search, Gmail support, image tools, Rhythmbox support, Tracker search and well... basically it has support for half the applications you can think of.

Install Firefox 4 In Ubuntu 10.04 / 10.10 Via PPA Repository

Firefox 4 (stable) will be released soon and I though I'd let you know how to install it in Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 - the proper way. No, using Ubuntuzilla or the Mozilla Daily PPA (well, this PPA is relatively ok but you'll never get stable builds so you might start receiving Firefox 4.1 alpha updates - or whatever the next Firefox version will be called -, as soon as Firefox 4 is released) is not the proper way to install Firefox 4. Gtk+ 3.2 Will Let You Run Any Application In A Browser

Gtk+ 3.2 will let you run any application in a browser thanks to the new HTML5 gdk backend. That means you'll be able to run GIMP, Gedit, a video editor or whatever, remotely (or on the same computer), using a web browser.

Minty Freshness: New LMDE Theme Based On Orta

It appears that SkiesOfAzel, the Orta theme developer was contacted by a LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) developer to create a similar theme for LMDE and the initial result can already be tested. This will most probably be the new Linux Mint Debian Edition default theme.

Smooth Inset: The First Real Theme For The New Gnome Shell

Half-left has released what's probably the first "real" theme for the new Gnome Shell (with the new automatic workspaces, overview re-layout and so on). Gnome Shell already looks pretty cool but check out Half-left's theme called "Smooth Inset":

Unity To Get Overlay Scrollbars Ubuntu 11.04

Christian Giordano has announced that Unity will get overlay scrollbars. This means the scrollbars will not be visible until you move your mouse over the side where the scrollbar used to be.

An update to the Ubuntu 11.04 installer (Ubiquity) finally brings upgrade support to the Ubuntu Live CD. That means that for instance if you use Ubuntu 10.10, when you'll boot the Ubuntu 11.04 Live CD you'll have an option to upgrade (without losing your documents and installed applications).

Gnome Shell 2.91.90 was released yesterday getting some final adjustments according to the release announcement: This release just about concludes user interface changes anticipated before GNOME 3.0. The only significant change we expect after this release is to add a native network indicator based on NetworkManager 0.9.

Synapse, the cool new semantic launcher for Linux written in Vala and powered by Zeitgeist reached version 0.2.4 codename "Anandamide". This version brings new plugins: calculator, Launchpad plugin (find bugs and branches on Launchpad), Pastebin, Imgur (upload images) and a selection plugin (allows you to execute actions on currently selected text).

Unity: The Systray Is Back, Themable Top Panel, Hide Animations, More Ubuntu 11.04 Updates

A new Unity version was released a few minutes ago with some exiting new features. New for Ubuntu 11.04 I mean, because they are something that's always been around in Gnome but not available or removed in Ubuntu 11.04 / Unity. The biggest change is the addition of a systray (notification area) to the Unity top panel. But it's different!

One of the design goals of Unity is to reduce the clutter of the desktop, another is to use space more efficiently. Based on this, Ubuntu user Andrea Azzarone came up with an idea/mockup to integrate (with autohide) the menu bar in the title bar for ummaximized windows:

Evernote is an service/application you can use to store notes, images and all kind of information (like audio, handwritten or video notes) for retrieving later. Nevernote is an open source clone of Evernote that works on Linux. While Evernote now runs on Linux through Wine, the application is quite slow so you may want to try Nevernote.
