Even though in the beginning of the default email client session at the Ubuntu Developer Summit in Budapest, it looked like it's certain that Evolution will stay as default in Ubuntu 11.10, towards the end of the session things changed and it was decided to stay with Evolution for now BUT switch to Thunderbird as the default email client in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot as long as it integrates with the desktop.

Along with Ubuntu 11.04, Xubuntu, Kubuntu and Lubuntu were also release. In this post I'll try to cover the changes in Xubuntu 11.04 - a very interesting Ubuntu flavor based on Xfce. The latest Xubuntu 11.04 comes with a complete makeover: a new default theme called Greybird (which even though is inspired by Elementary, there are quite a few differences) and updated icons:

Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal Released - See What`s New

  • WebUpd8; By Andrew Dickinson (Posted by hotice on Apr 28, 2011 8:26 AM EDT)
After the usual 6 months of development, Ubuntu 11.04 has finally been released. Ubuntu 11.04 doesn't come with GNOME 3 / GNOME Shell (in fact it's not even available in the repositories but only in a PPA) and instead it comes with an interface designed especially for Ubuntu called Unity (based on GNOME 2.x). Unity was already default in Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition but besides being default for the desktop edition (the netbook edition doesn't exist anymore starting with 11.04), it was also completely re-written and now uses Compiz.

ThemeSelector: GNOME Shell Extension To Change Themes (With Previews)

  • WebUpd8; By Andrew Dickinson (Posted by hotice on Apr 27, 2011 4:25 PM EDT)
  • Groups: GNOME; Story Type: News Story
GNOME Shell is truly great and I especially like how easy it is to extend it through extensions like the new ThemeSelector extension. ThemeSelector GNOME Shell extension is a new, unofficial GNOME Shell extension that adds a new tab in the Activities overview where all the GNOME Shell themes (not GTK themes!) installed under ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/themes show up. To change a theme, all you have to do is click it and you don't even have to reload GNOME Shell.

  • WebUpd8; By Andrew Dickinson (Posted by hotice on Apr 17, 2011 6:16 PM EDT)
Unity got its notification area (called Systray by the Ubuntu developers) back a while ago, but only for a few applications: Java apps, Mumble, Wine applications, Skype, and hp-systray. But there's an easy way to either re-enable the Systray for all applications or to whitelist a few applications you can't live without. Read on!

Introducing Gnome Tweak Tool - GUI To Configure Gnome 3 / Gnome Shell

  • WebUpd8; By Andrew Dickinson (Posted by hotice on Apr 6, 2011 3:18 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: News Story; Groups: GNOME
If you've been following the Gnome Shell development, you probably know that it doesn't provide a GUI tool to tweak some basic settings like changing the GTK, Gnome Shell theme or icon theme, re-enable the minimize and maximize buttons, and so on. For this reason, John Stowers has created "Gnome Tweak Tool", a 'power user' application you can use to tweak Gnome 3. But I think this tool will become very popular for any Gnome 3 user and not just power users considering how useful it already is. Read on!

Ubuntu 11.10 Will Not Ship With A Classic Gnome Desktop

  • WebUpd8; By Andrew Dickinson (Posted by hotice on Apr 3, 2011 7:37 PM EDT)
As you probably know (if you don't, read the Ubuntu 11.04 beta 1 post again), Ubuntu 11.04 will ship with an option to use the classic Gnome Desktop so Unity is not a must if you don't want to use it. All you have to do to use the Gnome panels is to select the Ubuntu Classic Desktop in the login screen.

Well, according to Mark Shuttleworth (see his comment here), there won't be such an option in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot:
