Twin Brothers of Separate Mothers

Linux does many things to bring many people together. Often, the effects of such convergences are powerful. Larry Cafiero, an Editor for the Santa Cruz Sentinel, tells the story of how 2 people with absolutely nothing in common can find common ground for the greater good. A great read and indeed food for thought.

The Mouse That Roared

It is easy to do...get comfortable with the things that are and quietly mourn the things that were. Some of us gave up a favorite app or device when we abandoned the Microsoft sinkhole. Sometimes we miss those little things from time to time. Helios makes a fantastic discovery that gives him pause and reason to re-think some recent opinions. If we've learned anything, it's that Linux isn't static and just when you least expect it...it gives you something back you thought was long gone.

Codeweavers Announces Support for LINdependence '08

News of an effort like this has no choice but to eventually get the attention of the Corporate Linux World. It also helps if you also call them directly and tell them what you are doing.

Because I use the KDE Desktop to its fullest potential, I want to help others realize how much you can expand the utilities of this environment. It goes farther than just grouping your system trays. Oh yes, in fact, my wife calls my desktop "Linux Command Central." Here is how a new user can maximize the most efficient and effective environment in Linux. And it's not me that says so. I get that straight from the penguin's mouth.

Back From The Mountain

Linux Advocate and Open Source Business owner, Ken Starks attended the Second Annual Linux foundation Collaboration Summit in his home town of Austin Texas this year. It was his first invite and what he comes away with may surprise many...and yes, those are real sharks.

How Will Microsoft Answer The Linux Threat?

One of you had the absolute audacity to email me and state that, in fact, Microsoft isn't even aware of the FOSS and Linux effort...that these Open Source entities are simply existing along side of MS...Microsoft isn't particularly worried about any impact that Linux or FOSS has on it's market.

2008 Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit - Whaddaya wanna say?

It's not every day some back-water blogger swindles his way into one of the most 733T Linux Collaborations to come down the Python Compiler. Since ya'll are buddies with this guy, take a look at the attendees list and see who you want to pester about something. Helios is just the guy to do it for you. Just leave your question or point in the comments and he'll do his best to get 'er done.

Factors in Making Linux Happen

The home computer user has spent a decade learning the intracasies and idiosyncrasies of Microsoft Windows. When faced with a different environment and many separate subsets of said environments, the user will balk where she once strode with confidence. Let's take a look at some of these reactions from different groups I have assembled over the years and see what we can learn from their reactions.

You only know good when you've seen bad...

I am weighing that possibility now against consuming copious amounts of alcohol on a regular basis...I don't know, maybe even a venture into the darker side of pharmaceuticals. Realizing any of the choices can be destructive, I am now calculating which will be the most numbing venture.

Lessons Learned? One Can Only Hope

Yet, when it comes down to it...CompUSA is gone. I personally will shed no tears. I am convinced that their blindness to consumer needs played some part in their demise if not a large one, whether it was Linux or any other non-microsoft product that caused it, well...maybe. You want to argue it? Look at this first.

It is great...that one-on-one bond that forms when you set someone free. But let's imagine for a moment if you could do the same thing for several people all at once. Oh heck, let's just shoot for the moon and beyond. What if you could do the same thing for say, oh I don't know...maybe large chunks of an entire town? That's what you and I are going to do.

The sound of "Operation Rolling Funder"

One "changes" history by going left on his way to work instead of going right. One changes history by mowing his lawn on Saturday instead of Sunday. History is Made when one gives of themselves in order to change the world for the better. We...all of us...have an opportunity now to do just that.

Eight Distros a Week

Some of us use Linux, some of us tell others about Linux, and a smaller percentage of people Advocate Linux. Let me introduce you to a true Open Source Advocate. Freedomeware indeed. Let the bell toll, let the news be heard. Now if we can all do about 1/10th of what this guy does, we can say we've truly helped spread the word. Let's take a look at some of the work this Author has done.

Who Fouled My Carpet...?

t only took me a few minutes to notice it. It would seem that the Freespire people have been given their marching orders and I would Like Eric Raymond to comment if he is allowed. I can understand why Linspire would have to bow to the Microsoft Collusion but why Freespire? Now I know that Linspire is expected to dance to Microsoft's tunes...If I calculate correctly, 5 top Linspire executives entered their employment with Linspire weighing 3 lbs less than they did when they left.

Yanking The Window Shade

I am loathe to offer real life suggestions based on Television and Movies...most often it indicates that one has less than a firm footing in their real world. In this case though, I am going to ask you to take the red pill. Together we will see how deep the Rabbit Hole goes.

Oh, To Be A Fly On The Wall...

Blog of helios has entered the storm prediction game. We are predicting a Tempest of unparalleled strength and the eye of that storm is going to be the current office of Steve Ballmer. Whaddayawanna bet that Ballmer not only pitches chairs, he will pitch every craftsman tool and appliance out the door as well?

For quite a while, Java applications have been considered the last choice in meeting one's application needs. Given the offerings I struggled with through the years, I am guilty of such discrimination myself. I would have rather gone without an application than be forced to use a java app. Much has changed.

I am past the honeymoon stage as a Linux User. I've seen it early in the morning before its had its coffee. I've stood too close to it before the morning tooth-brushing has taken place. I've even had my hands in parts of it that most people never need or want to see. Gone are the days of being endeared by cute little mannerisms. Past are the times when I would gaze lovingly at every part of it, cherishing the fact that it was mine.

We were out on Christmas Eve doing an install in a nasty part of town. The East side of Austin at night isn't a good place for a couple white boys to be boppin' the streets after dark. Never the less, we had an install to do there and we had to get it done.

Linux Advocate - Seeking Geeks Who Know...

The new year brings the promise of unprecedented growth to Linux and open-source software. It's good to have a plan to facilitate that growth. It's good to see that Lobby4Linux is on top of it.
