New Firefox loses features

THE MOZZARELLA Foundation's new version of the open sauce browser Firefox is apparently shipping with reduced functionality.

Donald French, a Firefox user and President of the Institute for Advanced Professional Studies in Boston, Massachusetts said that the loss of functionality is only noticable if you read the release notes and who ever does that?

According to French, Flamingbadger 1.5 blocks the use of any plug-in that it thinks is incompatible with its operation.

Open source firm to challenge VMware

XenSource, the company founded to provide support and maintenance for the open source Xen virtual-machine monitor, is releasing its first commercial product, a set of tools that the company says will make it easier to virtualize servers.

Called XenOptimizer, the product is in beta for the latest release of Xen, a community-developed program that provides an alternative to commercial offerings from VMware and others.

Debian hosts growing fast on the web

Debian GNU/Linux, a free Linux distribution started by Ian Murdock in 1993, is the fastest growing distribution for web servers, according to figures collated by network services vendor Netcraft.

The British company, which releases a monthly report on the number of active websites, web server software and operating systems in use, said its latest survey had counted 1.2 million active sites hosted on Debian.

EE Times' Venture Capital Counter (VCC) recorded 19 deals in November, which raised $268.69 million at $14.1 million per deal. The monthly figure more than doubled the $98.54 million funding raised in October and $112.8 million of investment made in November 2004. At 19 the number of deals done was exceptionally high, the second highest figure in two years.

MP3tunes last week introduced Oboe, a virtual music locker that stores an entire personal music library online, making it accessible anywhere for any digital music player, the company said. IBM goes open with office suite

IBM is adopting OpenDocument Format (ODF) for the first generally available release of its network-based collaboration and office productivity suite. IBM said Sunday its Workplace Managed Client 2.6, due in early 2006, would adopt ODF so users could easily share files and information. The Workplace Managed Client is currently available on a limited capacity, with more than one million deployed seats.

When Gary Mauldin, CEO of La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries, died from complications from an accident on Sept. 19, 2002, Kevin Mauldin inherited his brother's job -- as well as an outdated computer network.

"I'm a retailer, not a techie," Kevin Mauldin said. The younger sibling was adept at both retail and technology, increasing his company's sales by 35 percent in 2001 and virtually building the Denver-based furniture retailer's Unix-based operating system from the ground up.
