Stand-alone controller runs Linux
United Electronic Industries has introduced the UEIPAC line of programmable automation controllers. These stand-alone modules contain an embedded computer running a standard Linux operating system, two Ethernet ports, a serial port, an SD card interface, an inter-PAC sync interface, and either three or six I/O card slots.

Mozilla in tie-up with eBay
Mozilla, the non-profit software group, has agreed a tie-up with eBay as part of its continuing drive to take market share from Microsoft. The move, which will be announced early this year, is part of an increasingly commercial push by Mozilla, already one of the biggest thorns in Microsoft's side, to build the user base of its Firefox web browser by luring users from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

OpenSSL gets hard-fought revalidation
After a long and arduous journey that included a suspended validation last year, the Open Source Software Institute (OSSI) has announced that OpenSSL has regained its FIPS 140-2 validation and is now available for download. The validation process, which normally lasts a few months, took an astounding five years to complete, and those involved with the projects say they are already devising ways to avoid such long delays in future validations.

Ubuntu? Not for me, thanks
It's easy to see why Ubuntu is the chosen one (pun intended) - one only has to pop in a CD on any fairly modern PC and see the results. A graphical desktop is available for use fairly soon and anyone who wishes to take the next step and install the distribution has a very easy setup to follow. Of course, there are plenty of other distributions which are equally usable - Ubuntu just happens to be the one which is best-known.
New stable version of EnGarde Secure Linux hits the web
Guardian Digital on Feb. 7 announced the release of a new stable version EnGarde Secure Community Edition, version 3.0.12. The security-oriented Linux distribution features a 2.6.19 kernel and the latest versions of several server-based applications, and is intended for use as a Web, DNS, email, database, and general Internet server.
