Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) has launched its Patent Commons Project with backing from IBM - the industry's largest holder of technology patents - Computer Associates International (CA), Novell, Red Hat, Intel and Sun Microsystems.

Ukraine work with only software producer. Naturally, this is Microsoft Corporation. Recently the company has been humming through our country, especially fighting counterfeit software. And after the Orange Revolution Microsoft Corp. Chairman William H. Gates III became Councillor to President Viktor Yushchenko. So needless to say which software are delivered to Ukrainian schools.

Gnome versus KDE on the Corporate Desktop

Rumors were swirling last week that Novell was dropping KDE support. This news caused a flood of comments and protests. eWeek even got on the bandwagon and received clarification from Novell on the matter (KDE wasn't being dropped). Finally, Kevan Barney of Novell posted an official statement on Novell's PR blog.

VMWare ups the ante against Xen

VMWare released a new, free, as in beer, product today. The VMWare player can host VMWare machines created in the commercial VMWare products. Several sample "machines" are offered for download. This included a nice stack of business apps, assembled by SpikeSource, and based on your choice of SuSE 9.3 or Fedora Core 3.

Free Software developers from Africa are gathered at the University of the Western Cape this week for the second African Virtual Open Initiatives and Resources (AVOIR) developers workshop.
