For the story, due to license reasons, the version of Java packaged in Linux distributions is not the same as the one released on the official website. Each time a new version of Java is was released, Sun/Oracle people are were publishing a other distro specific release available on a dedicated website.
The history of Linux
When Linus Torvalds released Linux 0.01 on the internet 20 years ago, his idea of a free Unix clone to which anyone could contribute touched a creativenerve in people. Today, it would be impossible to imagine an IT world without Linux.

Linus switches to Xfce, calls for a Gnome 2 fork
It's not that I have rendering problems with gnome3 (although I do have those too), it's that the user experience of Gnome3 even without rendering problems is unacceptable. Why can't I have shortcuts on my desktop? Why can't I have the expose functionality? Wobbly windows? Why does anybody sane think that it's a good idea to have that "go to the crazy 'activities'" menu mode? I used to be upset when gnome developers decided it was "too complicated" for the user to remap some mouse buttons. In gnome3, the developers have apparently decided that it's "too complicated" to actually do real work on your desktop, and have decided to make it really annoying to do.

The Greatest Show on Earth : the relationship between Canonical and GNOME
This post is part five of a series of thoughts on the relationship between Canonical and GNOME.
Every now and then, the inexorable passage of time is rudely interrupted, and the natural path of history is changed before our very eyes. It is incredibly rare, I grant you, and most often involves a weapon of some description, but it happens.
The Slur “Open Core”: Toward More Diligent Analysis
Canonical, Ltd.'s new business model of choice — proprietary relicensing (once trailblazed by MySQL AB) — was also barely legitimate. In one literal sense, that's still true: it's legitimate in the sense that it doesn't violate GPL. In the sense of software freedom morality, I think proprietary relicensing harms the Free Software community too much, and that it was therefore a mistake to ever tolerate it.
Banshee and Ubuntu problem - from Debian POV
Debian has better values, being a volunteer-driven project where decisions are taken in the open.
In contrast, Ubuntu is a project managed and controlled by Canonical, and recent history has shown that Canonical had no problem imposing some decisions to the developers community
Fedora 15 + GNOME 3.0, a skippable release
The executive summary of my review is: from a desktop point of view, this is a release to skip, and I am not talking about the Alpha, but about F15 altogether.

Converting MySQL database to Firebird
I decided to automate conversion of MySQL database to Firebird. I got tired of manual find&replace process, and created a small parser that changes from MySQL to Firebird syntax.
Multiple Firebird Servers on Ubuntu
In this tutorial I will show you how to install multiple separate Firebird 2.1 servers on a single Host, lets just say you are short on budget and you want to have your testing/integration database running on the same environment as your production database, which is usually not preferable, but in some weird cases you find yourself needing such a setup

Can Firebird gain against MySQL?
Now, this could be a very good opportunity for all of the other open source database servers particularly the most popular ones like Firebird and PostgreSQL. I’m particularly fond of Firebird (the InterBase offspring) and use it in many projects and did a lot of consulting to Delphi developers using it. Can this be the rise of Firebird? MySQL with its huge popularity has certainly obscured it, so it could be a good time to act.
