Secure your webserver using SSL and TinyCA

  • www.linux-tip.eu; By Frank Neugebauer (Posted by fneagle on Oct 8, 2007 11:21 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Tutorial; Groups: Linux, SUSE
SSL is especially suited for HTTP since it can provide some protection even if only one side of the communication is authenticated. In the case of HTTP transactions over the Internet, typically, only the server side is authenticated. This workshop explains how to setup a virtual host using OpenSSL and TinyCA on an OpenSuse 10.2 server.

Apache virtual hosts quick and easy

  • Story Type: Tutorial
Virtual hosts are used to run more than one web site on a single machine. Virtual hosts can be "IP-based", meaning that you have a different IP address for every web site, or "name-based", meaning that you have multiple names running on each IP address. You can also run your web pages on different ports like 8080 or 8090. The fact that they are running on the same physical server is not apparent to the end user. This workshop describes the different setups based on an OpenSuse 10.2 server.

Xara Xtreme for Linux, a powerful graphics program

  • linux-tip.eu; By Frank Neugebauer (Posted by fneagle on Sep 12, 2007 2:19 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Tutorial; Groups: Linux
Xara Xtreme for Linux is a powerful, general purpose graphics program for Unix platforms including Linux, FreeBSD and (in development) OS-X. Xara Xtreme is based on Xara Xtreme for Windows . The source code was made available open-source in early 2006, and is being ported to Linux. The downloadable  version of Xara Xtreme for Linux  is working straight away on most Linux machines, but  the development is continuing daily. At the moment  two versions are available for download. The first is the recommended download because it will normally be the most stable. The second is the very latest, but untested version, built and published automatically. Warning: It may be unstable. Linux-Tip was using  the latest stable version provided as an “Autopackage Archive” on a Open Suse 10.2 Desktop. We recommend connecting your system to the Internet. In this case the script  can easily download and install the necessary packages automatically.

One way to enforce the traffic security is to use the SSH by the way of X11 tunneling or port forwarding. SSH was developed  to replace the insecure telnet, ftp,  rcp, rlogin, rsh software. FreeNX is already perfectly using this technology. In this article I will show, how to forward X11 using ssh without any additional software on the Linux site. Additionally I will explain how to run Linux applications on Windows XP clients using PuTTY and X-Deep/32.

Howto install a content filtering and virus checking proxy (Part II)

  • www.linux-tip.net; By Frank Neugebauer (Posted by fneagle on May 13, 2007 9:48 AM EDT)

Commercial filters are often expensive, especially when used on a large number of computers, as would be the case in a school computer lab or in small or medium companies with computer networks. In contrast, open source filters are generally freely available for download. In addition, since commercial filters are proprietary, in many cases the system administrator does not have the opportunity to modify or even view the lists of blocked sites.

Howto install a content filtering and virus checking proxy (Part I)

All Internet content carries a risk. Content Filtering helps companies and home users to stop unwanted data. It is used as part of Internet Firewalls or Proxy Servers to screen the content of all incoming Internet traffic. Content filtering usually works by specifying character strings that, if matched, indicate undesirable content that is to be screened out. Content is typically screened for pornographic content and sometimes also for violence- or hate-oriented content.

Use the CUBE with XGL and Compiz on your Suse Laptop.

Well, I got my laptop on Friday two weeks ago. I must say, the HP Compaq nx6310 was definitely a good choice. The only thing I don’t really like is the TrueLife screen. I don’t like it because of the glare, but I suppose I’ll get used to it. Anyway, one of the first things I did was partition the drive, and install OpenSuse 10.2, 64bit version. The installation went smoothly and everything (including WLAN) worked perfect. In this workshop I want to explain the installation of the 3D cube using XGL and Compiz.
