Open-source P2P projects keep swapping

The ripples of anxiety from last month's landmark Supreme Court ruling on peer-to-peer software haven't quite made it to Jonathan Nilson's home in Tallahassee, Fla. Nilson, a programmer who has been working on peer-to-peer software called Shareaza for several years, says the loose band of developers who share responsibility for the open-source project haven't been dissuaded from their work by the court ruling, which is casting a dark legal cloud over the future of companies such as Grokster and LimeWire.

Open source TV series downloadable

Go Open Source has released the Go Open television series for free download on the Internet. The series, hosted by John Vlismas and screened on SABC TV, is reported to be the first television show in the world to focus on open source. The broadcasts have been compressed and optimised for download purposes, using the MP4 format.

Red Hat expands open source stack

The Linux provider has added another mail product to its enterprise server offering Linux distributor Red Hat bulked up its open source enterprise server offering on Thursday by adding support for another open source mail product. Open source collaboration toolset Open-Xchange Server 5, which until now was only available on Novell's SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, will now be supported on Red Hat Enterprise Server 4.

Kerberos flaw opens apps to attack

Two serious security flaws in a technology widely used for network authentication could expose a swath of software products to hacker attack, experts have warned. The flaws could allow an online intruder to crash or gain access to computers running Kerberos, a freely available authentication technology that was developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

New Zealand schools go open source, Linux

Novell has signed a national agreement with the New Zealand Ministry of Education to provide all state and state-integrated schools with a range of Novell software, including SUSE Linux operating systems.

Server Version of Gecko Under Development

Our company is developing a server version of the Mozilla Gecko rendering engine. We plan to package it within a print server appliance that will be available in Fall 2005. By server, we mean that it runs headless, without browser windows or any kind of graphical user interface (GUI). In addition, it renders multiple jobs concurrently. Our target market is users of custom web applications that generate XHTML for interactive use and use some other formatting technology for printing 'souvenirs of transactions' to paper or virtual printing to formats such as PDF, AFP, and SVG.

Database vendors eye open-source effect

In what's become almost a yearly ritual, the big three database suppliers--Oracle, IBM and Microsoft--are prepping major product releases meant to steal away one another's customers. But unlike previous competitive cycles, this time around the entrenched suppliers are eyeing the threat posed by a growing number of open-source alternatives, particularly on the low end.

SCALE 3X Audio Series

LQ Radio has just posted the third in a series of audio clips from the recent SCALE 3X Expo. Clips posted so far include the Flight Gear booth, LinuxChix LA and Brion Vibber of Wikipedia. Still to come are Linux Astronomy, LAMPSIG and a conversation with SCALE's Media Director. All the audio clips are being released under a Creative Commons license.

The polls are closed and the results are in for the 2004 LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Awards. Among the winners are Firefox, MySQL and OpenOffice.org. The Members Choice Awards allow members of the Linux community to choose their favorite products in a variety of categories including Linux Distribution of the Year, Office Suite of the Year and Web Browser of the Year. Winners will be presented with an award at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo in Boston and will also receive a logo for their website.
