At the LinuxWorld Conference in Boston on Thursday, Microsoft announced the opening of a new Web site that will provide a glimpse into the company's once-secretive Open Source Lab. The idea of the site, dubbed Port 25, is to create a community for customers running mixed operating system environments.

Bas Nijjer, director of UK sales at CollabNet, points out that “the BerkleyDB database wedging problem noted by Tim has been addressed by Sleepycat and the enhancement will come with the next release of Subversion”. He also claims that “enterprises are turning to Subversion due to its focus on web deployment from design through implementation”. Well, the ones who like web deployment probably are; and Subversion's open source roots are probably attractive in some circles too.

Open-source Java specialist JBoss announced a major update to its jBPM business process management (BPM) suite at LinuxWorld in Boston. Sacha Labourey, JBoss chief technology officer, said new tools would plug into the firm's forthcoming enterprise service bus (ESB). "It's important to see how our projects fit into our overall service-oriented architecture [SOA] strategy and the JBoss ESB, which is an asynchronous bus that will have a plug-and-play architecture," he said.

A recent interview has DBAs talking about the merits of the open source PostgreSQL database management system (DBMS) as compared to Oracle – and their opinions truly run the gamut.
