Doom 3 Source Code Packaged and Tested, Almost Near Final Release

id Software has always been Linux friendly with most of its games having native Linux versions (Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake etc.). With source code release of Doom 3, community will now have access to the sophisticated ID Tech 4 Engine which can lead to some awesome user created mods and other goodies in future.

In opening keynote address of Ubutnu Developer Summit (UDS), Mark Shuttleworth said that lots of efforts will be put this cycle to make Ubuntu more power users friendly. Emphasis will be on improving multi-tasking, multi-monitor support and other features for power users. With 12.04 LTS, the support will also be extended to 5 years which has been 3 years until now for LTS releases. Also a more streamlined desktop experience will be delivered to corporate users who deploy Ubuntu at mass scale. Mark also talked about some plans for the next 14.04 LTS release, due in 2 years. He said that there will be efforts to deliver the core Unity platform to a range of devices that include smartphones, tablets and TVs.

Mega Games Pack (MGP) is a standalone client for Ubuntu that allows you to download and play hundreds of free Linux games. MGP is currently in beta testing mode. Some of the planned features include a themeable interface and support for global hotkeys.

Free Game Alliance is a collection five free and open source games spread across a variety of genres. All these games are cross platform and works on Linux, Mac and Windows. FGA aims to support these projects and increase awareness about them, so more developers and contributors can join them and collaborate. Much awaited game Dungeons of Dredmor from Gaslamp Games is now available for Linux and can be purchased from Desura. Dungeons of Dredmor is a graphical roguelike game with many engrossing gameplay elements, fantastic visuals, totally awesome sound effects and lots of humour. DoD features lots of character classes, items, skills, equipments, crafting and alchemy. The replaybility value is nearly infinite for this game. Easily one of the best Linux game to come out this year.

Ubuntu 11.10 'Oneiric Ocelot' has been released. This release brings numerous changes as compared to last version. With this release, Ubuntu has completely switched over to Gnome 3 stack. Many applications and application indicators have been ported to GTK3. Ubuntu 11.10 is based on 3.0.4 stable upstream Linux Kernel and comes with Gcc 4.6 as the default compiler. Multiarch support has been improved greatly and Ubuntu now supports hybrid CD/USB images.

Indian Supreme Court has given a customized DVD of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to more than 17,000 courts across the country. All the systems in these courts were running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 for last 4-5 years and now it will be replaced by Ubuntu. Many helpful links and materials are being provided to these courts. An SMS channel has also been setup which will provide helpful Ubuntu tricks and information to these courts.

AirMech, New Action/RTS Hybrid Game Coming to Linux

AirMech is an upcoming top down shooter, real time strategy hybrid game by Carbon Games Studio. The first gameplay footage was shown at PAX 2011 and since then it has garnered quite good response from viewers. In the game, you fly an aircraft with an ability to completely transform into a mechanical warrior thus serving as a multi-utility vehicle. The game has been completely made with open source tools and the developers are particularly proud of it. Gradually during the development, all closed source tools/libraries were dropped.

Ubuntu 11.10 Beta 2 has been released and iso images are now available for download. Most of the changes are under the hood since beta 1 so there are only few visible Changes. Beta 2 is based on Linux Kernel version 3.0.4 and Gnome 3.1.92 and brings improved multiarch support.

Desura Linux client is finally available as a closed beta for testing and bugfixing. Once the testing is finished, the client will be opened for all in coming few weeks. Desura website has also been updated and a whole lot of new Linux games have been added. The main page of Desura now features a nice Tux icon at the top. Users are taken to Linux games database once clicked.

Desura has launched a new Alpha Funding initiative very similar to other crowdfunding projects like Kickstarter and 8 bit Funding. 5 Indie games have been selected as launch titles and out of which 3 will have Linux versions. The idea behind alphafunding is simple, fans get instant access to their favorite games with the understanding that the game might be buggy and isn't complete - but frequent updates will add polish over time. The developers can then fund the games continued creation, giving supporters early access to the latest and greatest content.

Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot Beta 1 has been released bringing in revamped Unity interface, improved indicators, hidden window controls and many other features. Just before beta was released many packages were updated fixing lots of bugs bringing in the required polish. Dash categories which were not working were fixed and memory leaks were taken care of making it a lot faster. Dash also got copy/paste support and dragging applications on to the launcher is also fully working now.

Innovative Linux Game Blocks That Matter about which we have written plenty of times has won Microsoft's Dream.Build.Play 2011 competition with grand prize of $ 40,000. The game developers have been really friendly to the Linux community and has already released couple of tech demos for the Linux users for user feedback and testing. Once all the remaining issues and bugs are ironed out the game will be released. Lead developer Guillaume also said that they have not forgotten Linux users at all and will release it most probably in this week only, its just that they have too many things on their hands now and little time.
