"We believe there is tremendous opportunity for Red Hat over the next decade and that we're still in the early stages," Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst said during the company's fiscal 2008 year end conference call. "We are pleased with our fiscal 2008 results of surpassing $500 million in revenue and we are now squarely focused on our next goal, to become the first billion dollar revenue open source vendor."

There are a lot of people that confuse Free Software (and Open Source) with Shareware. Though all three types Free/Open/Share may well be available for free (as in zero cost), there are some fundamental licensing issues that make them each separate and distinct.

The systems management space has been dominated by proprietary vendors like IBM Tivoli and HP OpenView for years, though in recent years open source upstarts are trying to make a dent. Among those upstarts are GroundWork and Hyperic, both of whom are out this week with new product releases.

So how is Oracle doing with its Oracle Unbreakable Linux? Pretty well. According to Monica Kumar, senior director Linux and open source product marketing at Oracle, there are now 2,000 customers for Oracle's Linux. Those customers will now be getting a bonus from Oracle: free clustering software.

There is no shortage of hype around developing for the Apple iPhone. Moving beyond the hype there are also real tools, among them an open source tool from Ajax vendor Aptana. In a standing room–only session at the iPhone Summit segment of the AjaxWorld conference, Kevin Hakman, director of product marketing at Aptana, captivated the audience with his demonstration of how easy it is to develop Ajax applications for the iPhone.

The Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) has just announced that they've settled their dispute (on behalf of their client BusyBox) with Verizon. The Verizion law suit was originally filed in early December of 2007 , and alleged that Verizon had infringed on the GPL by way of its distribution of BusyBox inside of Actiontec equipment that was distributed to Verizon's FiOS customers.

Four years after Linux gets NSA's help, Sun is finally mature enough to handle NSA's technology. Back in 2004, the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) helped the Linux community to build something called SELinux, which brings mandatory access control (MAC) policies to the Linux kernel. Now four years later, Sun is getting the same technology from the NSA to use with its Solaris operating system. Sun's OpenSolaris community will work on integrating the NSA's Flux Advanced Security Kernel (Flask) architecture, which is a form of mandatory access control, for type enforcement

The Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) has just come out with a scathing analysis of Microsoft's Open Specification Promise(OSP). In short, the SFLC concludes that the OSP still leaves developers with the potential for patent risk.

Sure Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 is a stable distribution, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't change and improve - even inside of release cycles. Case in point is Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 (RHEL) now available as a Beta.

Mozilla's greatest success to date has come from its online efforts with the Firefox web browser. Since at least October of last year they've been working on the Mozilla Prism effort to bring the online experience to the desktop. That effort is taking a major step forward today. PHP 4, deployed on tens of millions of servers globally, is among the most successful languages of all time. But its run is coming to an end. Active development for the scripting language has been discontinued and security updates will conclude in August. And for some developers, PHP 4 will be history before Valentine's Day.

While the name "Netscape" is now mostly dead, its progeny continue to survive and develop. Many are familiar with Mozilla's efforts on the browser side, but Netscape also had another business -- a directory server business now run and expanded upon by Linux vendor Red Hat. Red Hat has been busily building out a major new evolution of Netscape Directory Server that will officially be called Red Hat Enterprise IPA (Identity, Policy and Audit).

Six months ago, Linux vendor Red Hat acquired the closed source Exadel Studio Pro IDE and pledged to turn it into a fully open source Red Hat product. On Monday, Red Hat officially released JBoss Developer Studio (JBDS), based on the Exadel product as a 100 percent open source IDE (define). The new Eclipse based IDE offering from Red Hat's JBoss division will provide a development environment that will work on both Windows and Linux for Java middleware solutions from JBoss.

For the last several years, Red Hat has been pushing forward the development of real-time enhancements for Linux. Yet the company has made no formal product announcement of how it would attempt to productize its real-time Linux innovations. That changed today, with the announcement of the Red Hat MRG (Messaging, Real Time and Grid) platform. The product is expected to be available as a public beta this month, with a generally available release set for early 2008.

Few topics are as contentious in the Linux world as GPL 3 (define), the general public license that details how many open source software programs can be used. During a session at the LinuxWorld conference here, Free Software Foundation counsel and co-author of the GPL 3 draft, Eben Moglen, explained the current status of the license draft discussion as well as some of the more contentious issues surrounding it.

The success of Linux over the past 15 years boils down to a few key factors, according to a panel of Linux luminaries.They also made some strong statements as to why Linux has succeeded where BSD failed, as well as noted the conditions required for Linux to succeed in the years to come.
