The Sulfur release adds a host of new features, including virtualization, authentication, networking, file system and yes, even features that will benefit desktop users. It's very rare that I've every been in a session at any conference session where an attendee heckles the panel and storms out. In a session at Interop on Open Source Risk that's exactly what happened..and it was intense!

Even more surprising is the fact that Microsoft is using open source to enable their management of open source servers and applications. It's all part of the new Miicrosoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 with cross platform extensions.

The future of the standalone operating system is not particularly bright. At least, that's according to Nat Friedman, chief technology and strategy officer for open source at Novell. "The big story here is Linux versus Windows," he said. "I do not believe that Microsoft has shown the interest, time and the will to allow an ISV to embed their operating system and intermediate between Microsoft and the customer."

Talk about FUD. I came across a release this AM titled, "Free Open Source Software Is Costing Vendors $60 Billion," New Standish Group International Study Finds". This 'research' firm claims in its release that they've spent 5 years studying the Open Source market (funny since in the last five years I've never heard of the Standish Group). After all that 'research' they've come to a big conclusion and one that is obviously very debatable.

After years in the shadows, the open source Python programming language is becoming increasingly mainstream. There are more users and more tools. Backers of Python now argue that Python is ready for the enterprise. But in a programming world already filled with languages such as Java, .NET, PHP and Ruby competing for share, is Python getting a bite? Its backers think so.
