I think they have done a very good job with Gnome 3. Gnome 3 was an effort to figure out how they can substantially improve the desktop. One interesting thing they did with the shell was that they made it possible for end user to script the desktop in a very easy way with Javascript extension.

Meet KDE's Own HUD AppMenu Runner

Alex Fiestas has restarted working on a project called AppMenu Runner which implements the same ideas of Unity's HUD. 'Actions Lookup' as Alex Fiestas named it more than a year ago (the blog was posted on December 22, 2010) can be a very useful tool, if it can be integrated with krunner. He has made another attempt at Actions Menu (which he now calls AppMenu Runner) and has published the code.

Future of Kubuntu, Should You Be Worried?

The beauty of the GNU/Linux world is that there is something for everyone. If Kubuntu is not working for you, you can always go with Linux Mint KDE, openSUSE KDE, Fedora, Chakra or Mepis. openSUSE is known for their great integration with KDE (Gnome apps actually look great in openSUSE KDE). There is one more distro in the making called Mageia (fork of Mandriva) which uses KDE. With Active Plasma 2 and Spark KDE has entered the post-PC era. KDE is already future proof.

So, there is nothing for KDE fans to be worried about.

In my opinion as long as its GNU/Linux it doesn't matter whether its Kubuntu, Linux Mint, openSUSE or Fedora. It's like a big garden, pick the flower that you like. The only OS I am fan of is the one that works for me. Period.

And, for god's sake don't fight that your pink is better than his red.

Linux Mint KDE 12 Review: Your Perfect Desktop

Linux Mint team has done a commendable job with Cinnamon project where they are trying to help those users who are not comfortable with Unity. It's great to see a project putting its users above everything else. Despite being a small team, Linux Mint successfully delivered Gnome+ Cinnamon and has now released a great KDE edition. With Linux Mint KDE you get the best of both worlds. What more can one ask for. Go ahead and give Linux Mint KDE a try, trust me you won't go back.

Kubuntu Is Dead, Time To Switch To Linux Mint KDE, openSUSE?

I heard some rumors at the FOSDEM that Canonical was pulling plugs on KDE, which also creates the Kubuntu spin of Ubuntu. What it meant, if the rumors were to be believed, that KDE won't have a great integration with Ubuntu.

Linux 3.3 Will Let You Boot Into Android: Greg-KH

  • Muktware; By Swapnil Bhartiya (Posted by muktware on Feb 4, 2012 10:50 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: News Story; Groups: Linux
The 3.3 kernel release will let you boot an Android userspace with no modifications, but not very good power management. The 3.4 kernel release will hopefully have the power management hooks that Android needs in it, along with a few other minor missing infrastructure pieces that didn't make it into the 3.3 kernel release.

How Much Gnome 3.4 Will Be There In Ubuntu 12.04?

Ubuntu 12.04 is an LTS version so the team has to be very careful about what they pick or drop as this is the version which is used by enterprise customers or by those who want a stable system well supported for a longer period of time. They have to be careful about the individual applications as well, so they are picking different versions of applications from the Gnome stack.

Seamonkey review: Firefox's Lightweight Hyper-Functional Cousin

  • Muktware; By Timothy Matias (Posted by muktware on Feb 3, 2012 11:02 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Reviews
Seamonkey has an interesting history, in that it is both older and younger than Firefox. Older, because originally it was built from Mozilla Suite code (for those of you that don't know, Mozilla Application Suite is the parent of Firefox, and was originally built from the code of Netscape Navigator which was open-sourced in 1998). Seamonkey is also younger than Firefox in that Seamonkey's first version, 1.0, was not released until 2006, 2 years after Firefox 1.0. Quite a few people are not even aware of the existence of Seamonkey or the Mozilla Suite, thinking that Firefox was the successor to Netscape Navigator, created deliberately to enact their vendetta against Microsoft for their monopolistic practices that killed Netscape. But glorious fantasies aside, Mozilla Application Suite was the real successor.
