Mysql database monitoring service in the works

Merlin is a server-based database monitoring and advisory service which continually scans a user's database network for any likely system crashes, bottlenecks or security vulnerabilities, the source said. Under development at MySQL for 22 months, Merlin is due to debut late in the fourth quarter of this calendar year or early in the first quarter of 2007. It's unclear whether Merlin contains any third-party software or if MySQL developers have modelled the offering on any existing database monitoring and advisory service.

Gnu released new drafts of Free Documentation Licenses

The Free Software Foundation released the first drafts for the next versions of GNU's Free Documentation Licenses. Two drafts were released; one for the GFDL v2 and another for a simpler variant of the FDL.

Browser makers keep screwing up Web apps

In a roundtable this afternoon at the MIT Emerging Techologies Conference, panelists agreed that updates to browsers are constantly breaking Web applications, causing endless headaches. Both Internet Explorer and Safari came in for criticism. The exception was Firefox, an open source browser that adheres more closely to standards.

Red Hat sees FY07 greater China sales up 100 pct

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Red Hat Inc. (RHAT.O: Quote, Profile, Research), a distributor of open-source Linux software, expects its sales in the greater China region to double in fiscal 2007 and grow by 85 percent in fiscal 2008, an executive said on Tuesday. "Our plan is to have 100 percent growth this year, and 85 percent growth next year," Michael Chen, general manager of Red Hat China, told Reuters in an interview.
