Porteus is an amazing user-friendly Slackware-based live distribution, the successor to Slax. I had a lot of success with the 32-bit version (on a 64-bit laptop), but not the 64-bit version.
2011 June 20: Linux and My Computers' Hardware
I can't post on the UnetBootin public wiki, so I'm posting a roundup of my experiences with Linux and my computers' hardware.
FOLLOW-UP: Poll: Should I Switch away from Linux Mint?
In the end, I chose to do what most people suggested: I'm sticking with what I know works, and that is Linux Mint 9 LTS "Isadora" GNOME.
Poll: Should I Switch away from Linux Mint?
Should I stay with Linux Mint 9 LTS "Isadora", or switch to #! (or Pinguy OS, or the newest Linux Mint, or something else Linux or BSD entirely)?
Microsoft Windows Update Annoyances Strike Again
Microsoft Windows updates took so long to install that my laptop fell asleep. I had to wake it up just to get my computer to shut down. Then it blames me. WHAT!?
Tech Support via CLI
I and a relative whose computer now runs Linux Mint (thanks to yours truly) are both more familiar with GUIs, yet the easiest way for me to support this relative was through CLI instructions.
Review: Pinguy OS 11.04 Mini
Pinguy OS 11.04 is a lot more awesome than before, now that it has a Mini edition too.
Review: Kororaa 14 "Nemo"
Aside from a Fedora 14 "Laughlin"-derived kernel panic, Kororaa 14 "Nemo" is stable, fast, easy-to-use, and just pretty cool.
Review: Linux Mint 11 "Katya" GNOME
It's pretty good, but aesthetic & Compiz issues keep it from being truly "excellent" as before.
How-To: Make KDE Elementary
There aren't any tutorials like this that I've seen for KDE, which is a shame considering just how customizable KDE is.
Review: Zenwalk 7.0
Though not for newbies, it's a great distribution for people who want a lightweight, stable, user-friendly distribution i.e. the stability of Slackware without the hassle.
Revisited: SimplyMEPIS 11.0
I should have been more patient last time, and this time after reading feedback I was able to get SimplyMEPIS 11.0 to work! Honestly, though, it isn't really anything special.
Practical Alternatives to Skype (For Me)
Skype is being bought by Microsoft, which is bad for Linux users. However, there is no way I'm convincing my contacts to switch to Ekiga or Empathy. What else can I do?
Mozilla: It Has a Spine
The DHS tries to bend Mozilla to its will. Mozilla doesn't. Bravo Mozilla! I know I'm a little late with this news, but that's because I was kind of busy earlier in the week. Anyway, the news (Nate Anderson, Ars Technica) is that the US government (specifically, the Department of Homeland Security) tried to force Mozilla to remove an add-on for Firefox called MAFIAAFire.
Review: SimplyMEPIS 11.0
SimplyMEPIS 11.0 is supposed to be a user-friendly Debian-based KDE distribution, but it absolutely refused to cooperate with my hardware, and I couldn't get the information I wanted.
Linux Mint: Two Years, Going Steady
I've been using Linux Mint for exactly two years, and I've been loving 99.8% of it. I can only give it my highest recommendation.
Review: Edubuntu 11.04
Edubuntu is more than just Ubuntu with educational packages. In addition, it sticks with GNOME 2.X as the default instead of Unity, making it a compelling choice for some.
Adobe Flash Troubles: 64-Bit or 32-Bit PAE?
I'm having trouble viewing Hulu on 64-bit Linux Mint, but my computer has 4 GB of RAM. Should I switch to 32-bit PAE or stick with 64-bit?
Review: GNOME 3
GNOME 3 seems a lot more mature than it was two months ago, and I could see myself possibly eventually getting used to it, but for now, I'll stick with Linux Mint, thanks.
Review: Linux Mint Xfce 201104
Linux Mint Xfce is a great new addition to the Debian-based Linux Mint family, but its biggest competition comes from Debian-based Linux Mint GNOME.
