"In this article we are attempting to take a look through the glasses of the Free Software Foundation in order to understand what drives people involved with it and why does it do what it does."
GNU/Linux users compete to help each other!
"One of the best things about the universe of Free Software of which GNU/Linux is a flagship is its community and the willingness of so many people in it to help each other make their GNU/Linux and Free Software experience better. If something doesn't work, if you don't know how to do something, if you don't know what software you need for a task you want to do, whatever issue you have there is a great chance someone in the community will be not only able, but happily willing to help. On Nuxified.org we are about to celebrate this trait throughout the month February of this year, in form of a competition."
Wow, Bill, this thing is Defective!
Having a "Wow moment" with Windows Vista? Bill Gates invites you to share them on Monday January 29th at the Vista launch event. FSF's DefectiveByDesign and BadVista campaigns plan to be there outside the event and they invite you to come along as well.
GNU/Solaris - the Free OS of the Future?
"Sun have been looking into re-licensing Solaris under dual license; the current CDDL and GPLv3. The idea behind this is not to scare away the current users of Solaris who use it under the CDDL, and to attract people the huge pool of Free Software users and contributors who are out there."

Forget iPhone, hail OpenMoko, the true revolution
"It is a phone which rivals Apple's iPhone as a technological concept and is yet based on completely open technologies, fully extensible by anyone and fully under control of its user. Enter OpenMoko, an attractive phone which may not currently be much of a competitor in terms of specifications alone, but beats Apple hands down on openness and therefore the disruptive potential."
Envisioning the next generation GNOME Baker
A new project is being launched to create the next generation CD/DVD burning program using the latest available technologies such as libburnia libraries.
Coping with MS-specific hardware
"Microsoft Windows is still unfortunately the most widespread platform which is why most major hardware manufacturers still first and foremost make sure their hardware works well with Windows. Even if Windows Vista is a flop in general compared to previous Windows versions, it is reasonable to assume that hardware manufacturers will prepare their hardware for various novelties that Vista may be offering."
Free Culture Foundation enters the copyright debate
"Just before new year, on December 31st 2006 the Free Culture Foundation site has been launched. The site appears to be mimicking the Free Software Foundation in form and also presents four core freedoms on which the Free Culture Movement should be based, to use, create, share and learn. On Libervis.com we have been discussing the need for defining core principles of the Free Culture Movement before and the FCF might just be filling the gap."
The Internet is a conversation (Part 2)
"Today, I would like to tell you more about the conversation of the Internet. This conversation, as I explained before, has started around the eighties and has come to encompass hundreds of millions of human beings today. Well, I'd like to show you what many different people from all walks of life can do when they're having a conversation that is called OpenOffice.org ."
It's a discussion site
How many times do people confuse the opinion of the whole site with the opinion of one of its members? This has happened to Libervis.com enough times. It's a discussion site, with respect to freedom of speech, not a propaganda publication!
You change the World 2.0
There is some significant symbolic and historical value in the gesture that the popular Time Magazine exercised this month. It may be remembered as one of the signs of historic change for decades to come. Time Magazine declared you the person of the year because you changed the world. Internet opened its doors to you and you dared to enter, raise your voice and cooperate on making the magic happen. You connected, sent the signal and the conversation ensued.
MSXML Is Not an Open Standard
ECMA has approved Microsofts Office OpenXML and is about to submit it to the ISO/IEC for consideration as an open standard. However, as it currently stands, this format cannot be considered a proper Open Standard.
Zenwalk: A Slackware desktop alternative
Zenwalk is a lightweight desktop oriented Slackware based GNU/Linux distribution that aims to be fast and user friendly. It is still quite new, but the growth, as well as the progress of development, has been pretty fast so far. I've taken a hike with the latest release, Zenwalk 4.0, and here's what I can say about it.
A cathedral of formats or a castle of cards?
"Microsoft's Open XML file format may perhaps be one day an OSI standard (who knows, so many things are OSI certified, one day Microsoft may be able to certify its own business practices as the ISO standard for monopolistic position and anti-competitive behaviour) but it will never be an open standard."

Template contest results show off capabilities of OpenOffice.org
The contest resulted in some superior and innovative work. "Some of the templates show just how advanced and flexible Openoffice.org's OpenDocument format is as both a Word and Spreadsheet ODF processor. The winning templates and many others breaks a myth that Openoffice.org cannot do advanced editing functions like Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel."
Of hypocrisy and the FSF
FSF has a list of 100% Free Software distros they recommend for use which doesn't include Debian, although FSF itself uses Debian on its servers. Hypocritical or well justified?
Introducing the Novell's Cunning Plan™
So what if Novell had not sold out? If we consider that the Novell executives are not the donkeys some would like to see in order to give way to their own arguments, the scenario of the « Novell's Cunning Plan ™ » comes to mind. What this means is that Novell may perhaps have defined a strategy that would trap Microsoft and let Novell grow its market share of Linux and other software.
