The KDE desktop is about to take a major step forward, with the announcement today of the roadmap for KDE Frameworks 5.0. Most eyes in the Linux desktop world are on the Berlin Desktop Summit this week, as members of the GNOME and KDE camps come together for a joint technical conference running from August 6-12 at Humboldt University in Berlin. Currently, KDE seems to be making the most strides in the joint event, with the surprise announcement of the KDE 5.0 roadmap, which was revealed by KDE developer Aaron Seigo in his blog Sunday.

It's a song we've heard before: all the apps will live in the browser, so who cares what the OS will be? Observers of Linux--including me--have raised this up as the one big chance to capture desktop share, because Linux will have the same access to apps as all the other operating systems. OEMs, the sales pitch will go, why pay Microsoft all that money when you can just load up Linux to give your customers what they need! But increasingly I have some doubts that any Linux distribution is going to be able to get its collective act together in time.

My editor at LinuxPro, Joe Casad, asked me if I wanted to write an article covering the differences between GNOME 2 and GNOME 3, but I declined (I was already working on something else). The reason for his request was this piece by my colleague, Steven J. Vaughn-Nichols, where Steven that talks about Linus Torvalds' intense dislike for GNOME 3. In the article, Linux suggests that a fork of GNOME 3 is in order. Here's a bit of a spoiler . . . Linus runs Linux Mint 11 for his personal desktop. A fine choice if I do say so myself, although I happen to like the KDE version.

Cross-platform malware is still a rare occurrence, so when it's detected, it usually attracts more attention than the malware engineered to affect only one particular platform. A recent one, detected by McAfee and "named" IncognitoRAT attacks both Windows and Mac OS users. So, how does it manage to do it?

Yesterday when I introduced Plasma Active, I secretly thought to myself "oh no, so it's begun." See, I have this underlying fear that KDE is going to go the way of GNOME 3 and Unity and finding the removal of user choice in upcoming KDE software compilations sowed the seeds. Despite my biased first impressions, I booted the live ISO provided by open-six. open-six used openSUSE as the basis for it's live CD. It was a bit slow to boot, but truthfully, I didn't really expect it to finish. Afterall, the list of known working devices is short and I was booting on my regular desktop machine with NVIDIA graphics and two monitors. Well, it did finish booting and it even started the Plasma Active desktop. (The desktop was cloned across the two monitors - which is really best-case scenario without proprietary graphic drivers.) And darn it all, I really hate to admit this... but my first word, my first thought was, "Wow!" This Plasma Active thing might really be cool on a little netbook or tablet.
