aKademy-es 2006 in Barcelona

Did you think that this year we would not have a KDE event in Spain? Nothing further from reality. Badopi (the LUG of Barcelona) are organising the first aKademy-es event so you can have an excuse to meet other Spanish KDE developers, users, translators, artists and share some good days with other KDE people.

Review: SimplyMEPIS 3.4-3

SimplyMEPIS is a KDE-based, Debian-derived distro that focuses on desktop use. The previous stable release came out in May of 2005, but the newest version of SimplyMEPIS is scheduled for release today, and it looks like a great release for anyone who's interested in desktop Linux.

Tibco, Adobe offer open-source AJAX alternatives

Tibco Software and Adobe Systems plan to offer alternatives to the open-source Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) tools being created by the newly formed Open AJAX collaborative.

Tibco this week plans to unveil Version 3.1 of its Tibco General Interface AJAX tools, while Adobe earlier this month introduced the public beta of its Adobe Flex 2.0 and Adobe Flash Player 8.5 tools, which use a proprietary scripting language.

Final Gnome 2.12 version released

The Gnome project Wednesday released version 2.12.3 of its popular Linux desktop, the final release in the 2.12 branch. Version 2.13 will be skipped, and the next edition, v2.14, is already well into development, the project said.

Review: The Open Source Portfolio Initiative

The free software movement was inspired by the ideals of academic research, and in the last few years it has given some of the fruits of that inspiration back to academia. One of the largest open source projects in academia is the Open Source Portfolio Initiative (OSP) -- a specialized content management system, comparable to WebCT. Its functions are to assist universities in administering Web servers, teachers in preparing online course components, and both teachers and students in designing and using portfolios, which are academically oriented personal Web pages. Despite some flaws, the project fulfills its functions well.

Google: Gmail Chat Users Should Disable Firefox AdBlock

Google Inc. is advising users of Gmail Chat to disable the Firefox browser plug-in AdBlock when using the new instant messaging feature embedded within the search engine's Web mail service.

In a response to a support question, the Mountain View, Calif., company said AdBlock, which is used to block advertising on Web pages, "often interferes with Gmail's chat features, causing Firefox to crash."

Openmfg Launches Hybrid Open Source ERP Suite

OpenMFG LLC will launch this week a hybrid open source enterprise resource planning(ERP) suite. The developer says it has integrated credit card processing, financial reporting and integration with package delivery services.

OpenMFG's ERP platform is built on Linux operating system, PostgreSQL database and OpenRPT report writer. It runs on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and commercial UNIX systems.
