This is one of the best expert reviews on hardware I’ve read so far: Debian Developer Steinar H. Gunderson decided to buy a Dell Latitude D420 laptop, and tells us about his experiences with it.
AM2 mobos and systems
Our readers are searching for infos about them. LinuxJournal’s chief Nicholas Peterey warns about them. Now German c’t magazine tested a bunch of them in their 17/06 issue (available in print and in German only, sadly). And I can hardly wait to get one…
Help needed: artwork for Etch
Wanna get involved in producing something cool, like the next Debian Linux distribution? Afraid of not being able to do so, because you are no programmer? Try to help out with artwork for Etch!
Green WiFi? We could need that, too!
The internet sites technocrat.net, ZDNet, and the maker Green WiFi themselves report about successful test setups with cheap, low-cost, and solar-powered routers, which could be deployed to “developing countries”.
Official sister magazine?
Looks like the Debian crowd started something like a magazine: Let’s welcome The Debian Times!
SSL error messages?
Yesterday, someone told me: “…do you realize that you have an SSL certificate problem at your site?”. Well, it still is a problem, or rather a minor annoyance, but the problem is with browsers, not with our site. Here are the explanations:
New community project targets the Debian user
The new domain thedebianuser.org is still in its infancy, but at least its focus is pretty clear: it targets Debian users, which includes pretty much everyone from new converts to Ubuntu users to Debian Developers. After all, we are all users.
New and even better Linux HTPC
Lixsystems (we reported about them already) has answered our questions and now offers a new HTPC based on an Asus AM2 mainboard:
Howto lm-sensors
Once, our webhosting provider sent a mail about a failed CPU fan in the machine which runs our domain, announing that it would be down for something like half an hour or so to repair it. I was impressed. Since I know that this machine is running an older AMD K7, and how hot they can get, I thought: “Wow - he discovered this before the poor CPU went to meet it’s $DEITY?”
Wordpress vulnerability?
There could be a vulnerability in Wordpress. First I read about it here (via Planet Debian), then on the OP (original poster)’s blog
Open letter to nVidia - plus some background on that
No; this time it’s no open letter from me, or from us. It is from Floris Kraak, and it was published in LWN.net here. For those of you who need an update about why binary & closed source (video) drivers are to be considered evil, read this - and please also follow the comments, like in the above article as well.
Cool Linux HTPC systems
HTPCs, or Home Theater Personal Computers, are the hype of the year. And if you’re looking for a HTPC barebone which supports and even includes (comes with) Linux, you may want to visit LixSystems
AMD prices are dropping
The announcement and the first tests of the new Conroes as well as some serious price droppings of Intels legacy Netburst chips (aka P4, Pentium D8xx, Pentium D9xx, and so forth) had started the price war. Now AMD reacts.
New Top 100 List
Every year in July, PC World Magazine issues a list of products and services of which they think are the créme de la créme. Tho I don’t really agree with them on most points, it’s an interesting read. I’ll give some examples on why I think it’s not *the* ultimate list IMHO:
Chance missed - again
The latest German c’t magazine by Hannover-based publisher Heise (see also Heise Online, mostly in German) has a comparison of several dedicated and virtual hosting offers.
Linux games
Some eight days ago, Joe Barr asked in Newsforge about Tremulous: The best free software game ever?

Today I stumbled upon a number of essays from Dominic Humphries. I found them useful, especially for new users of Free and Open Source software, and probably Linux (or any of the BSDs).
ODF proposed to become Malaysian Standard by year-end 2006
Glad to hear this, and congratulations to all who had to work hard to achieve it. And, of course, congratulations to Malaysia and its authorities!
Getting closer with Etch
Today I tried Debian Etch on my Dell Optiplex GX 620 at work again. I updated, dist-upgraded, and after a bit of special tweaking, everything worked - including mail and calendar access from Evolution to our Exchange 2k3 server in the company.
Goliath strikes back, or: Conroe beats them all
It took some years - which is normal in the development of new architectures, but very slow until the market (read: big guys like Dell, or the stock exchange) reacted and accepted the fact that AMD had a clear winner, at least in the server and game PC areas.
