Enterprises Warming Up to Firebird Open-Source Database
Evans Data Corp.'s Winter 2005 Database Development Survey looked at the database preferences of some 406 developers in mostly medium to large enterprises. Of those surveyed, 23 percent of developers picked Firebird for use in "edge" databases—in other words, those that are embedded in systems or in devices, such as a point-of-sale system in a retail outlet or a network device. Runners-up included Microsoft Corp.'s Access, at 21 percent, and Microsoft's SQL Server, at 13 percent. RFID tagging will likely fuel interest in Firebird, said Joe McKendrick. McKendrick is an analyst for Evans.

FireBird is making major inroads in the database space, according to Evans Data Corporation's new Winter 2005 Database Development Survey. FireBird is the most used open source database for Enterprise applications, more database developers use FireBird for single purpose applications and FireBird is tied for the most used database for workgroup applications. Further, MySQL and FireBird are locked in a virtual tie in the open source database space with each being used by just over half of database developers who use open source databases

The first Lazarus XML-tutorial
It deals with reading XML-files using DOM. I will learn more about FPC/Lazarus/XML like SAX-parsing, XPath, XML-RPC and then write some more tutorials - so, perhaps, in the end we will have a collection which can be called "FPC and XML"
Eclipse 3 on SableVM Java Virtual Machine
The joined efforts of SableVM JVM hackers and GNU Classpath hackers finally allowed Eclipse 3 to run on SableVM!. According to what Etienne told me, he was running Eclipse 3 on his Debian PowerPC for a few hours, including editing, compiling and running simple java programs. And all that using SableVM as the only Java Virtual Machine on his laptop.

I ran into a guy I knew from school a few years ago at a gathering in Pasadena. He worked for Sun at the time, and was talking with some other people, discussing linux. The tone in his voice was unmistakeable: linux was a toy, solaris was a serious kernel. He proceeded to enumerate the various virtues of the Solaris kernel and the demerits of the linux kernel.
Fyracle: Oracle-mode Firebird is released
A beta is currently available that allow Firebird to support the major Oracle-based ERP/CRM application Compiere with virtually no change to the Compiere code base. No other proprietary or open-source database system can currently do this. The best part : Fyracle is open source if you want to compile it manually it's a set of patches that needs to be run over the firebird 1.5.1 source tree
Firebird at 20 years

I quit my job at DEC in August, took a three day end-of-summer holiday, and began work on September 4, 1984 in my new career as a software entrepreneur. As best as I can reconstruct, the first two files were cpre.c and cpre.h (C preprocessor), later changed to gpre.c and gpre.h.
Firebird Relational Database 1.5.1 Final Released
The Firebird Project announces the release of Firebird V1.5.1. this relese represents a committment by the project to develop and deliver ongoing improvements to this popular open source database engine.
