I have been successfully using GIMP for what seems like years. It's free, it's stable and once you understand the rather strange menu layout, it actually provides fantastic functionality. But the reality remains that some people are still trying to come off their Photoshop dependency, and for these individuals, the argument about how fantastic it is tends to fall on deaf ears.

I'm fairly sure that this is not open source software. My reasoning for stating this, since I have yet to see anything even close to Express Scribe, in the open source world as of yet. Much like MainActor is to those who want entry level software for decent video editing, I see Express Scribe as filling this same need, and perhaps even hitting a more important piece of the Linux puzzle.

Which OS do you think is best for computer forensics? Obviously, being as we are Linux users, we'd likely recommend admins consider using a Linux-based approach for such a task. But which applications are honestly available on this platform? Not only that, are any of them open source?

I cannot tell you how many times I have found myself looking at that ugly and rather useless Xorg reconfigure screen that has never worked on Ubuntu for me. Generally, I would see something like this (not the exact image, but close) and then ask you to diagnose the problem from the x server output. This is fine for an advanced distro, but not for Ubuntu or its derivatives.

For the last couple of months, I have been racking my brain to understand why some people are able to migrate to Linux easily, while others take longer to switch and others still have no interest in giving it more than a 2-day test drive?

In the past, I have found myself hesitant to jump to the Macintosh platform. It was not because there is anything wrong with OS X per se, but the lack of an application called Evolution, among other Linux-only applications, that I would miss using Ubuntu.

It is hardly a fluke that Ubuntu really began to attract former Windows users roughly around the same time as Windows Vista came out. Despite the number of Windows migrants who eventually floated back to Windows XP, the fact is that projects like Wubi make it really easy to slide into a Linux mindset.

I've said it before, with the proper support in place, anyone can use certain Linux distributions successfully. And apparently, this has been shown to be true yet again. But even considering this success story, there remains a shortage of understanding on which dial-up modems will work and why, if that new all-in-one printer grandma just purchased will work with her chosen distribution and so on.

Could this be the badly needed 'fix' that we need in the wireless world with regard to Linux? While it does present a new world of simplicity with getting innovation underway, I do not think this alone is going to help get more wireless vendors on board with the Linux movement anytime soon.

HP selling Linux PCs? Surely this must be a mistake? Not necessarily, as Dell has demonstrated that there is a niche market of people who are full-time Linux users, but the lack of time to 'test out' various hardware with a Live CD, configure wireless cards and so on can be too much. Considering the enormous amount of competition between Dell and HP, seeing HP jump on the Linux bandwagon only makes sense for them. I guess that means they will hopefully stop using those awful Broadcom wireless chipsets they are so fond of.

Xandros has received a fair share of grief from the community who was not thrilled about the strong arm, er, I mean IP protection payments to Microsoft. As I have explained in the past, I understand Xandros' concerns over a potential legal battle, in addition to the issues of selling a product to customers when you have a constant legal threat to worry about. In that aspect, I 'get' why they gave in to the Redmond giant.

For many open source enthusiasts, the problem is finding the funds to help support their favorite open source projects, which include various Linux distros. It's not that we do not have the money, it's the method of forwarding the necessary funds that's the problem.

It has long since been my own personal experience that Linux documentation is largely ignored by Linux beginners in exchange for the interactivity of Linux forums. The reasons why will be further explored in this piece; however, today I have located a solid exception to the rule.
