Open Source software will kill the jobs of Bill and Steve if they don't get with the program. As far as creating jobs, you can take all that money you save by not shoveling your cash on to the Microsoft money train and hire some more people to support your operation. You could also hire a few programmers of your own to tailor and optimize the software to your business, something you have no chance of doing with proprietary software. Sounds like a way of creating jobs if you ask me.

The "killing jobs" argument only works when it is assumed that most software is written for shrink wrap sales. And even then it's a pretty iffy argument. I'd be willing to bet that there are a lot more lines of code written by companies for their own internal use, than for shrink wrap. What it comes down to is that if the work can be accomplished more efficiently using a distributed, open source approach, then there's more time and resources left to work on other things, and consequently, more wealth to go around (leaving aside the issue of distribution).
