My understanding is that Google is a private company, where founders have put at risk personal work and money, to offer an internet search engine primarily, to anyone who wants to use it, free of charge. No one is compelled to use it. They earn money by whatever contracts they make with other companies, and that's not what is being reproached to Google. To my naive knowledge, Google was not mandated by any state department to exist in the first place, nor to provide its services. It is not a state service and has always been a private venture. Google is being reproached to favor it's own interests in search results. How insane is that? Do the US favor European or Asiatic businesses? It's just that I don't understand this new bonanza in the USA. |

"Discount as conspiracy theories if you wish" That would be a bit much to discount. |

From the links : 'How the CIA made Google'. Thanks for the links. From these, one answer to my request would be : "Google was funded by the state and is not really a private asset." It's always easy to claim ownership and/or control of others' work, especially by state departments. The same has been said for Facebook, next might be Tweeter. In any case, it will be endless conjecture, like the egg and the hen still unanswered question. I rather understand that socialism is creeping in the USA, quite interesting to follow. |

nmset wrote:like the egg and the hen still unanswered question.Sorry, but it's been answered. The egg came first. The type of egg is determined not by what laid it, but by what hatches from it. If a chicken lays an egg, from which hatches some mutant spawn with a bill instead of a beak, then it wasn't a chicken egg. |

The chicken may have came before the chicken egg,
but 'the egg' was here before the chicken Good specifications matter, as any software developer or designer knows. ;) |

Oh, wow. What a beautiful re-statement of the thesis in my comment. Please accept my apologies for de-railing this thread. |

Wait... what? Seriously, what? I had an earlier version of my comment, in which I addressed my dear TxtEdMacs, but I decided against posting it. I used the LXer.com editor as I typed it. Did the LXer comment system somehow save my un-posted comment, for TxtEdMacs to view? Please put all humor and sarcasm aside. I'm asking this in all seriousness. |

Nope, LXer doesn't save much of anything other than system logs. Your unposted comments were in memory and went away when you exited the editor without saving. |

Thanks, bob. That's what I thought. Then either the board is haunted, or TxtEdMacs has more powers than he's letting on. And just in time for Hallowe'en, no less. |

I've always believed that TxtEdMacs had super powers. |
