GitLab REQUIRES 8gb RAM or more acording to its HW reqs webpage, https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/install/requirements.html

Before installing GL, what else can someone do who doesn'tHAVE that "8gb RAM or more" installed on their machine?? Is there a lighter resource-hoggng GitLab Lite or something similar which is gaining in popularity? (Haven't yet seen this)

Take a look at Gogs (https://gogs.io/) and Gitea (https://gitea.io/en-US/). They both claim to be lightweight. I can't speak for either.

On the other side of the coin, one really has to look hard these days to find a machine with less than 8GB of memory, especially one that you would buy to run a hosted service.

I put 64GB in the last machine I built out and spent less than $800 for the whole thing.

root servers for sure. but virtual servers are still offered with far less. so it's a budget question.
