Tor does not protect you from anything. Tor simply obscures your originating IP address. There are particular entry points and exit points to Tor. And Tor traffic itself is carefully watched, second only to traffic hitting the entry and exit nodes. If an individual is using Tor, care must be employed to not reveal oneself if anonymity is the goal... a single login to an account while using Tor and then not using Tor gives away any anonymity.

It bothers me that Tor is called out as something that makes what one does online 'disappear'... Tor does no such thing. An Internet user is no less vulnerable to surveillance using Tor than without. Furthermore, since Tor traffic is closely monitored by both 'the good guys' and 'the bad guys', one must assume that anything sent through Tor has been recorded multiple times by every national government on Earth as well as most criminal organizations.

Use of Tor for basic web browsing is ill advised advice.

I agree with this. Why I've never bothered with Tor.
