I stopped buying HP printers years ago when they quickly increased prices on ink and toner cartridges. All I buy and recommend now is Brother products. They work well with Linux, and you can use 3rd party cartridges with them if you choose. But even their OEM cartridges are priced better than HP's, in my experience.

I second this recommendation.

I love the Linux support from Brother and have been using them exclusively for the past five years. For the record my average ink cartridge costs less than $2, although some of the newer models are starting to move up the ink price. It's best to check that before picking your model.

Brother also has a bunch of three penguin models that work perfectly in Linux, https://www.openprinting.org/printers/manufacturer/Brother. Nice!
