I've done the same here... and heard the same here too... There seem to be at least two flavors of tech people - pardon the pigeon hole, it makes things easy and I'm lazy:
Many of my friends say the exact same thing as in the article, "You'll get owned." ... although, there is never a good reason for that statement, and I have not been compromised. If I am compromised, it will be my fault. I suppose that's also part of the problem, people generally do not like to be the responsible party when things break... The article author's thoughts resonant well with me. I don't understand other engineers who opt out of all the fun. |

dotmatrix: you speak good words my friend. Some of us won't be owned, and that's one reason why openness is so important to us. Linux OS, open hardware, RPi, odroid, ddwrt ... these are some of the tools of the trade for those of us who will not be handing over control to the "vendors". |
