http://www.microlinux.fr/microlinux/template/backup/ Heavily inspired by this great article: http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/ I'm using this on all my servers, LAN and public. |

I certainly recommend BackInTime. We use it at home and work and it's great. |

Of course rsync is the core of all of the backup solutions mentioned above. rsync is awesome. 19 years young and still as good as ever. |

In a recent job with a fortune 500 company, I used rsync to keep 5 TB of project data in sync between locations on three continents (high latency connections). Even though the project was very active with hundreds of developers working into that 5TB space, we were still able to keep updates going on an hourly basis. The company's Windows-centric IT organization hated that we had a solid Linux solution and they worked for six months to try to replace it with a proprietary system. After six months of study, their recommendation was that we should continue with Linux and rsync. There was no Windows-based replacement at any price that could come close. |

>There was no Windows-based replacement at any price that could come close. Whenever I'm forced to help some relative or friend with a Windows question, I'm always shocked at the continued and obstinate lack of good easy to use tools like: rsync, ssh, scp, vi, sed, gcc, as, ld, gdb And reasonable file permissions... And the lack of a 'real' database like my goto... postgresql. I find it slightly disturbing that some of my very technical friends prefer Windows... I guess -- enter in WSL. I think WSL should stand for: Windows Second -to- Linux. Seriously, when in Windows I feel hamstrung. It's truly painful. |
