I volunteer at our local Free Geek in Vancouver. Same kind of deal as in the article although their emphasis is slightly different. They are primarily into the environmental side of things: responsible disposal of electronic gear that has reached end of life instead of it going to landfill or some electronic mountain in China or Africa. Secondly, they try to reuse and remanufacture PCs and other electronic goods to extend their useful life. It's a big load of fun to volunteer there and it's all for a good cause. I would heartily recommend it to anybody looking to do some good work with the spare time. |
