Has anyone noticed that Elive is perpetual Beta since 2005? It's also the only commercial Linux distribution that asks for your credit card number AFTER wiping your hard disk.

All I've noticed is that I've never been compelled to even download it.

I don't mind distributions that are openly commercial. What I do mind is distributions that turn out to be commercial in the middle of the installer.

I knew that ELive was a commercial distribution but looking at their website you would never know it.

There is even a donate button which suggests you can just donate to the project.

There is no mention of payment required anywhere except buried in the FAQs on this page http://www.elivecd.org/faq/

You have to click the link "free software / open source / selling" before there is finally a piece mentioning that a small payment is required to keep the project going. No price tag is displayed anywhere though.

I don't mind paying and I get the developers justifications for charging but if they are fully behind that decision, show the price on the front page of the website or at the download stage.
