Has anyone noticed that Elive is perpetual Beta since 2005? It's also the only commercial Linux distribution that asks for your credit card number AFTER wiping your hard disk. |

All I've noticed is that I've never been compelled to even download it. |

kikinovak: Based on your feedback, the story has been removed from the LXer newswire. Thanks for the report. |

I don't mind distributions that are openly commercial. What I do mind is distributions that turn out to be commercial in the middle of the installer. |

I knew that ELive was a commercial distribution but looking at their website you would never know it. There is even a donate button which suggests you can just donate to the project. There is no mention of payment required anywhere except buried in the FAQs on this page http://www.elivecd.org/faq/ You have to click the link "free software / open source / selling" before there is finally a piece mentioning that a small payment is required to keep the project going. No price tag is displayed anywhere though. I don't mind paying and I get the developers justifications for charging but if they are fully behind that decision, show the price on the front page of the website or at the download stage. |
