Not that Google had any significant credibility before this "revelation", but just another reason for the rest of the world not to trust American tech companies anymore.

Well, actually it is encrypting by default if you get it on a new Nexus device. However, there are a lot of problems with forcing all sellers of Android 5 devices to not turn it off.

Of course, you shouldn't trust Google, but in this particular case they are not trying to tell you they are encrypting devices when they are not. Of course that doesn't mean that they aren't selling all the information you transmit and receive over the air to advertisers. It's only while it's stored locally that it's protected.
