Pretty much every machine still needs a command line text editor at one time or another. Others would vote for emacs, of course.

What about : Android ?

(I know, I know, a little provocative, yet the most successful ...)

@jdixon: Personally, as far as command line text editors go,... I'd have to say nano over vi/vim. Emacs doesn't even really qualify as a command line text editor. It's almost an OS unto itself.

And, seriously,... How in heck does PulseAudio make it to a "Best" list?!?! Lately, it would only make it to a "Less Bad" list for me... (and to think, it was made by the same guy who's bringing us systemd).

Viewing other computers via Skype screen sharing doesn't even work, on Linux.

I've never been able to get it to work either. Now, I've never tried Linux to Linux, only Linux to Windows.

I used to love Skype on Linux and I used it all the time, right up to the point where Microsoft bought Skype and decided to start routing supervisory messaging through their servers. I imagine Microsoft got a hefty NSA premium for pulling off that trick.

Have not touched it since then.

Emacs is an OS with a built-in editor.

Actually, I have heard it argued that, as an OS, the main thing Emacs lacks is... a decent text editor.

that was fixed when they introduced vi mode:

http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/VimMode http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/ViperMode http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/Vimpulse http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/Evil

but apparently, using it makes you an evil person, so i'll refrain and just stick to plain vim.

Actually, that would be Vigor (http://vigor.sourceforge.net/).

Ah yes, Vigor. The editor of choice for evil geniuses the world over.

Where it all started.
