That is a massive number of sites. Tor is not an easy, "magic" bullet for privacy it seems.

In the end the site and its databases has to be stored somewhere, and those places can be infiltrated. From elsewhere i get the impression that Silk Road 2.0 was taken down by FBI getting someone on the inside at the server hotel, and that the site admin has used his real name to lease the space.

Tor used to carry a warning on startup:

"Tor is experimental software. Do not rely on it for strong anonymity."

"Tor can't help you if you use it wrong! Learn how to be safe at https://www.torproject.org/download/download "

Is what it now displays, folks who use Tor should take heed as so far from what we know is that Tor has not been breached but the folks that use it, use it wrong in fact as far as i'm aware in every case so far it was not due to a Tor failure but either a browser failure or human error, please correct me if i'm wrong and give factual specifics.

I know for a fact as the maintainer of SelekTOR that folks are using it wrong, In the first few lines of my webpage I spell out in bold capital letters that it is not a replacement for the Tor Browser and then explain why and provide a link to the Tor Browser project. I sometimes wonder if folks actually read this based on the emails I receive.

Don't get me wrong I think what the FBI, NCA etc are doing in regards to the criminals is good but when folks who are genuinely relying on it to protect themselves and their right to free speech then get caught by their respective authorities/govt/juntas for excercising that right because they use it wrongly then I genuinely worry about it and certainly I've come close to just pulling the app and wondering if I made things just too easy.

I saw a large uptake of the app during the Arab Spring and I was pretty much praying that they knew how to use this stuff correctly which is something a devout atheist like myself shouldn't be doing.

Cheers

AFAICT, Tor itself isn't breached. That would be frontpage news and would heat up the Internet cabling considerably. Yet we hear more and more about criminal investigations rounding up suspects who were active on Tor. (Not necessarily a bad thing.)

I just wonder how effective (and safe) Tor is, if you absolutely need to know the ins and out of the system to even be anonymous. I don't care if somebody selling Krokodil gets busted, but people depending on anonymity for their basic human rights is something else. The detail in this devil may be that Tor gives a false sense of safety and that this makes people trip up.

How desirable is a tool that comes with the following instructions: "The tool is 99.999% technically sound, but you need to use it absolutely 101% correct, or else it'll destroy your life."
