OK... the survey /creator/ (!?) actually comes out and says:

"If I give you a free puppy, well, you have got some significant costs for that puppy in terms of attention, care, maintenance, and support."

For him, taking the free puppy is the wrong decision when you can just go ahead and spend big bucks on the puppy and /still/ have the "significant costs for that puppy in terms of attention, care, maintenance, and support." Such a deal, eh?

(Edited: I mistook the survey creator for a respondent.)

And if you pay for your puppy -- well then, you STILL have those costs "in terms of attention, care, maintenance, and support."

And at least as often or not, the free mongrel turns out to be a better dog (smarter, healthier, etc.) than that expensive "pure-bred" pup does.

And the ones that were strays are usually far more appreciative of the care, food, and attention they receive.

It is just about the dumbest argument that gets made.

Yes -- it is easy to overstate the savings of free software, but a million dollars not spent in licensing fees = a couple of good employees and a tidy little pop on the profit front.
