It is a backup distro in case Canonical gets nasty

The Mint folks are keeping this in their back pockets in case Canonical tries to shut off access to their repositories. I have LMDE on a test box to keep track of it. It currently requires system admin knowledge beyond what Ubuntu based Mint does. Once installed it is a nice distro as the article indicates. To appeal to much of Mint's current user base they would have to do a lot of work on their LMDE installer.
I hope Canonical doesn't force them to do this. They would just make more enemies. But if they do, LMDE is a viable alternate. |

Canonical has already gotten nasty with them. http://news.softpedia.com/news/Canonical-Explains-Why-Linux-... http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/11/canonical-dev-dont-use-li... Honestly, they're starting to do more harm than good with Mir and with all this nonsense they're spouting above. |
