Missing the point

I think Jack Wallen entirely misses the point: the very diversity of Linux makes it possible for forms that are solid XP replacements and forms that sharpen the bleeding edge to coexist peacefully (well, sort of!) within the overall Linux community. He gets one thing right: “Linux has more untapped potential than any other platform.” And that means it can replace XP, play Steam games, run supercomputers, hone the bleeding edge, and do it all at once without breaking a sweat. That's what “Linux for the future” can and should do. |

if the point is to prove that linux can run on anything, then yes. but i think he does have a point for linux to become popular among the masses, replacing XP is not really interesting. even if it is becoming a popular option for large corporations to get more out of their hardware. the workers will likely compare the "old" linux machine at work with their new windows machine at home... greetings, eMBee. |

@mbaehrl.. I think it's even better to say that when OPEN SOURCE apps run on anything and then GET FREQUENTLY USED, then Linux and other F/OSS will pretty much completely replace Lo$edoze XPyew and much of the older proprietary crud floating around. 2c |

fluffererbeer: you mean like libreoffice and firefox on windows and OSX? that's certainly an approach not to be discounted... greetings, eMBee. |

@mb..., Yeah, a lead-in to more F/OSS of ANY stripes..... although HOPEFULLY mostly fully-GPL'd. I think one of the main points -- though maybe not YOUR point above -- is that F/OSS together w/ Linux itself should arrive "among the masses" as TRANSPARENTLY as possible. 2 more c's. |
