I have picked up LFS three times, and each time read through a bit and put it back down. There was a time when I would have tried it, and I salute anyone who does so. |

I actually managed to get all the way through it and after a huge amount of time I had a working system. I'm not sure particularly how much I actually learned and how much I was just typing stuff because the guide told me what to type. There were times along the way that I had to battle through because things had changed slightly but I got there. In all honesty apart from the small amount that I picked up along the way if I really wanted my own custom system I would just go for Arch or a base Debian install and build from there. Compiling a Linux system and tools just as a base to compile again was a lot of work for the end result. |

You must admit, though, that as "people of the open source", it is quite some feeling to stand on this mountaintop knowing that you have created a running system where every byte in your system was built by you from its source. |
