I have picked up LFS three times, and each time read through a bit and put it back down.

There was a time when I would have tried it, and I salute anyone who does so.

I actually managed to get all the way through it and after a huge amount of time I had a working system.

I'm not sure particularly how much I actually learned and how much I was just typing stuff because the guide told me what to type.

There were times along the way that I had to battle through because things had changed slightly but I got there.

In all honesty apart from the small amount that I picked up along the way if I really wanted my own custom system I would just go for Arch or a base Debian install and build from there.

Compiling a Linux system and tools just as a base to compile again was a lot of work for the end result.

You must admit, though, that as "people of the open source", it is quite some feeling to stand on this mountaintop knowing that you have created a running system where every byte in your system was built by you from its source.
