I believe SJVN does more harm than good to Linux and free software in general. His silly bias is so obvious people necessarily react in negative ways to what he writes.

When I read the article, I felt that several good points were raised.

sicofante, perhaps if you would be more specific about the points of your disagreement, then a better discussion could follow. As it stands, your post looks more like a troll than a sincere statement.

If all stories that do more harm than good to Linux were rejected, LXer would be pretty empty I'm afraid. And besides, who are we (either you, me or anybode?) to decide what's good or not, that's an eternal dilemma.

The official line is something like:

LXer is a place not only meant to read articles you like, but also for users to stay informed what Linux (or Canonical or any other company in fact) "critics" might say. Not necessarily only to publish stories which resonate with the general attitude of readers, because that would be preaching to the choir.

Of course, you're happy to skip any articles written by him, that's why we prominently display the writer of the article. There's whole myriads of LXer readers who always skip certain writers, or maybe I should say trolls, astroturfers, plain fools, "independent analysts" (cough), op-editors and the like.

The comments are often more informative than the article. And it's a bit entertaining to see the Windows apologists run out of "arguments" and revert to ad hominem attacks. Those that actually do have arguments, that is.

Comments in ZDNet are annoying distractions, especially on Linux-related stories.

Depends on your point of view, I suppose.

There is the occasional worthwhile Linux-knowledgeable commenter in the ZDNet forums and SJVN's articles there -- but d*mned few, and way out-numbered by ignorant &/or partisan Windows fanatics and trolls (Even the pro-Linux commenters can be rather ignorant or trollish).

There is the odd one worth reading though. For example, CFWhitman's comments are generally quite good.

As well, SJVN appears to be making an effort to post more substantive pieces to his ZDN column, than was his wont lately, and this may be having some positive effect on the quality of the attached discussions.

I've always liked SJVN's articles. The comments are good for a laugh for the most part, nothing more. I think the first post might just be one of those Windows trolls with no argument.
