Typical,... Methinks that VLC has to headquarters itself in a jurisdiction that doesn't suck up to big business... I think there's a dwarf planet in the Oort cloud that might be good,... maybe,... |

Even if VLC was headquartered in Nauru it couldn't be distributed as is in France without problems. Think libdvdcss. |

Whether libdvdcss (the latest version) actually runs afoul of the DMCA or other gov't reinforced copyright restrictions has never been adjudicated. Libdvdcss, in its current form, doesn't use any cracked keys. It's worth a read on the wiki... |

If it were adjudicated I doubt the code would fair well. In any case, most distributors, and certainly all the commercial distributors, won't touch it with a ten foot pole. Would you have preferred if I said patent encumbered codecs? |

I'm not so sure you're right,... If you were, the powers that be would have tried to shut down the code base years ago... Plus, being a lawyer, I have a slightly different read on it... |

I don't doubt you have more knowledge of the law that I ever will. However, I do know of Linux distributors, small ones, who received cease and desist letters on some of those codecs followed by threats of impending legal action. AFAIK, all but one caved and that one is in a jurisdiction that doesn't recognize software patents. |

Yet, it's as easy as ever to get & install those codecs... The powers that be want it difficult to install the codecs,... not impossible. Impossible would bring the spectre of anti-trust and spoil the party. Difficult makes it inconvenient, but still possible to tell people that competition is still available,... And,... Don't forget,... Technically, Android is a Linux distribution, ... and there's no difficulty in media playback with Android ... |

This is strange, because I thought that France had a thing about encryption being a no-no, which is why Deb-Multimedia.org was hosted in France, because the codecs and such that would play DVDs (at the time of its founding) were "legal" there but not in such backwards places as the USA. So very sad that Sony is asking to be made irrelevant. |

Sony's irrelevance began years ago. |
