With OpenMandriva and Mageia we will be having 2 almost identical developments. Is there really a need for this ? |

Exactly what I was thinking. I'd rather they joined forces and give us things like an LTS release rather than them only lasting eighteen months. Bridges need to be mended. |

Actually, they are not at all identical. For starters, Mageia forked from Mandriva 2010 and is still using standard Red Hat rpm 4.x for their packages. Mandriva 2011 and 2012 use rpm 5.x, which is actually a fork. The two are not compatible with one another. OpenMandriva is closer to ROSA Linux than it is to Mageia and actually picked up some ROSA developed apps that significantly change the desktop look and feel, i.e. ROMP for the media player and klook. There are other under the hood differences A lot of the Mandriva 2011/2012 development was done at ROSA Labs and in Brazil. We all know what happened to the original French developers. The net result was a significant change in direction. |
