The SMS review is interesting but the bit about Secure Boot.

...the bit about UEFI Secure Boot is damning. Anyone who still believes that Secure Boot isn't about vendor lock-in hasn't been paying attention. Sure, the standard requires the ability to disable Secure Boot or install your own keys. However, there is no requirement that the process be documented. There is no requirement against OEMs putting up a big red warning screen promising the apocalypse if Secure Boot is disabled. There is no requirement that the capability to disable Secure Boot or install alternate keys be clear or obvious rather than cleverly hidden. I'm reminded of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The plans for the bypass was in a dusty,, disused file cabinet. The lights had gone out. So had the stairs. The file cabinet has a large sign saying "Beware of the Leopard". That pretty much describes Jesse's experience with UEFI on an HP desktop. |
