Yeah, I've heard it before.

Let me know when I can go to HP's website, pull up their consumer machines, and find Linux as one of the options under OS. Until then, I don't care. I'm not a business, I'm not in the market for "solutions". I'm a consumer. I want a computer, I want it to run Linux, and I want the option to be as readily available as Windows. But apparently that's too much to ask. |

@jdixon The funny thing is that HP actually supports Linux fairly well. (note their printer drivers and acknowledgement of Linux on their support pages). I'm inclined to see this situation as more a reflection of Microsoft's power over the consumer desktop market than a reflection of HP's attitude towards Linux. |

> I'm inclined to see this situation as more a reflection of Microsoft's power over the consumer desktop market than a reflection of HP's attitude towards Linux. Quite possibly true. But does that actually make the situation any better? Which is better, to not offer a system because you think people don't want it, or to not offer it because you're afraid of one of your suppliers? |

Let me know when I can go to HP's website, pull up their consumer machines, and find Linux as one of the options under OS. Would this help a little ? http://h71028.www7.hp.com/enterprise/cache/309906-0-0-0-121.... |

@Francy......that's marvellous.....Desktops and all. I have recently seen articles that suggest at least some OEMs are no longer rolling over totally to Redmond's demands for 100% Microsoft pre-installation. Great to see some hard evidence. |

@Francy Did you not notice the word enterprise in the link. @jdixon specifically mentioned consumer. |
Ridcully Nov 06, 2012 3:13 AM EDT |
@cabreh......yes, it does have the word "enterprise" in the link........however go to the site and it is advertising Linux for both desktop and laptop installations......And business is a consumer in the general sense of the word. And if Linux is available under the website conditions, I suspect it would not be very difficult to obtain the hardware. Mind you, when the big chain stores also have HP computers toting Linux alongside Microsoft installed HP gear, then it would be really, really nice. |

@Ridcully..... Yes, I went there. And if you want SLES or RHEL on your business computer that's fine with them, and you get to pay for it. However, if you want a consumer level linux on those computers, well, good luck. |

> However, if you want a consumer level linux on those computers, well, good luck. Exactly. Dell is the same way.. |

I thought Dell currently has the one ultrabook offering with Ubuntu. |

Yes, jdixon, it is. |
