And it's still far more tolerable than the slew of "How to install some really niche program in Ubuntu" that permeate the news wires constantly. |

Well, two people beat me to it, so I didn't bother to post one. But, as gus3 says, a raft of Slackware posts once a year or so beats the continual barrage of Ubuntu this, Ubuntu that, and Ubuntu the other posts. To match the Ubuntu hype, I'd have to post every update to the Slackware changelog to the wire, with the appropriate glowing exclamations about how great it was, how it was sure to revolutionize the computing experience, and how no one had ever done anything like it before. |

Slack is not one to go fixing what ain't broken, so reviewers will hafta fall back on the old bromides about how stable it is, how Slack has been around longer than iEverything, and how if you don't know the CLI, yer SOL. Notice it's been 3 days since the new release and no reviews. You can always tell if the reviewer is really a GUI fan. ;) Besides, I never update my Slack box until the rev rev. nb |

I'm not holding at least MY breath to wait for Gentooo, Slickware, and the static minor leaguers to come out with their "flurry" of occasional welcome-as-breaths-of-fresh-air announcements. The devs and power-users of Baboontu and its derivatives, OTOH, are absolutely BONKERS of consistently broadcasting evetything-and-the-kitchen-sink to push their distro! Why use facts to support the need for all those Baboontu announcements when fanbois can fabricate a few minor details and regurgitate their own glowing testimonials on THEIR distro fav??? 2c |

@BernieSwiss and jdixon, Wasn't there a LiveCD awhile back based on freeBSD?? And IIRC, the startup scripts for Slackware and for the various open source BSD's like this LiveCD are or were all fairly similar, no? And BTW, what's been HAPPENING with new releases of all those non-Linux BSD variants anyway??? fb |

Gentoo releases Live DVD's somewhat regularly - not installable of course (at least not easily so, and not supported for that purpose). SystemRescueCD is also Gentoo based, and among the best in its genre. |

I guess I shouldn't post it when SalixOS 14.0 is released unless I want my head handed to me. FWIW, the beta looks very promising. Pity I probably won't use it, except maybe on the really old netbook-like device (Toshiba Libretto L1). For now, because of the new work environment, I want (need?) to live in SUSE-land. |

Surely that's worthy of the newswire. :) You'll notice that in an attempt to alleviate the Ubuntu boredom, I was posting the Slackware betas to the newswire. SuSE has always been a nice distro. The fact that they didn't have a freely downloadable version back in the day was the only reason I never used it. |

@caitlyn: I remember there was a time when you were using Slackware - or some derivative - and Xfce as your primary desktop. If you're interested, I spent the past summer honing my company's "Microlinux Enterprise Desktop": a stock Slackware base with an Xfce desktop on steroids. My project is a bit similar to what the GnomeSlackBuild people did with GNOME, except it's based on Xfce. The idea behind the project is to have a full-blown Slackware-and-Xfce based desktop, a series of apps for all kinds of tasks - office, graphics, multimedia, etc. - one app per task, with all the edges sanded down as much as possbible. The first 13.37-based prototype is already in use in our local school, on two servers, twenty client machines and sixty users.
