dozen years ago listening to Linux tell us that all the important action was going to be in user space. He understood the difference between a computer with an OS and a computer that you can use quite well. Which brings the obvious question: Could not the GNOME folks have understood the difference between application layer and OS kernel? Different needs, different approaches. The easy answer, of course, is that they stumbled over the same problem that dogs most free software: the primacy of the developer. Out in the real world, developers don't generally run the show -- they run the development, answering to the folks who have to sell, support, and use their work. |

It is the nature of the beast. FOSS developers are in it for their please not for the money. It is up to the distributors, commercial or otherwise, to package it and make the best of it for the end users. Mind you, I am not saying that is the right thing, they could and should do both. |
