Is it just me and my knee-jerk gut-reaction?

Or is this another "rational", short-sighted "bad idea"? I have seen so many posts from people "trying Linux" for the first time, who have had their first tentative Linux/Ubuntuu venture rescued for ignominious "can't even install it on my computer" failure, by the alternate install CD |

I think the rationale here is that they are going to bring the added functionality of the "alternate" (aka Debian) installer into the graphical installer so you'll be able to create LVM and encrypted LVM, and encrypted partitions (maybe you can already do this, I'm not sure) in the main Ubuntu installer. Sure there are older systems that won't boot the Ubuntu installer (I've run into this problem many times), but there's always Debian, Slackware, Arch, the BSDs, etc., with ncurses installers that will work on older hardware. Ubuntu wants to leave old machines behind. They're going to dump 32-bit servers, I remember hearing. There will be plenty of distributions that will continue to cater to those with older hardware. |
