Quoting:In the long run, Newell says, he'd like to get all 2,500 games now available through Steam running on Linux. That's a tall order, but it may just be possible if it turns out that Microsoft's proprietary technologies make for an inferior gaming platform The average user probably won't make use of the Open Source nature of Linux, but it is a critical attribute that attracts and benefits application developers when high end critical applications are involved. It is about time for game developers to realise the benefits of source availability to optimize and improve their game performance. No wonder why it is the dominant OS used by most communication companies. Good luck getting that from Windows. |

I wouldn't pay much attention to the claim. There are enough differences between the two that it's hard to verify. There have been cases where video drivers detected benchmarks and reduced image quality to reduce the GPU load and gain a higher FPS. There are games that are faster on Wine because of missing features that causes the game engine to reduce quality to compensate. If the result is reproduced on several different game engines from different companies, then it may mean something. |

Gee I hope those test results don't mean what they appear to mean. As soon as I can think of some reason why they might not I'll post it here. |

Not sure why Wine has been mentioned as it has nothing to do with what Valve are doing. First of all Valve are creating a native linux client to support all the graphical features of the windows counterpart using OpenGL4 which means the graphics engine is not falling back and providing an inferior image. Please note that OpenGL4 is more than a match for DirectX 11 in the feature department. True that seeing it reproduced on more game engines would be nice as each game engine has its quirks and some game engines are tweaked for certain makers graphics cards so some will run better on Nvidia while others will be better on AMD. iD have long known that OpenGL is superior in terms of speed to DirectX as to why this is I will leave it to the graphics experts but for me the only reason DirectX is successful is not on merit but due to MS OS monopoly and marketing. The simple fact that their native client runs better on Linux is no surprise to me |

Quoting:I wouldn't pay much attention to the claim. ... There have been cases where video drivers detected benchmarks and reduced image quality to reduce the GPU load and gain a higher FPS Do you have any proof/indication that it is the case in this test? Otherwise, your doubt has no validity. |

> Otherwise, your doubt has no validity. His doubt may be perfectly valid. It's unsupported. Those aren't the same thing. |

But does that logic apply here? They weren't running a technical "benchmark", they were running an actual game (Left4Dead2) |

There seems to be a lot of this sort of angst. Oh noes the Linux version might actually run better, that can't be allowed to be true. |

It hurts MS fanboys' brains to think that Linux could do it one better... |

Actually, it seems to hurt their brains to think that Linux can even do as well -- particularly on the desktop (some of them have wrapped their minds around the idea that Linux is good on servers -- but desktops are another matter). |
