About half the article is just the usual FUD,... Drivers, drivers, drivers,... and the obligatory reference to the command line. Only about half the article is actually thought provoking. The reason Valve is doing this is a hedge on bets about the MS app store. If MS cut Valve (and others) a cherry deal, they might consider dropping this Steam on Linux initiative. The fact is that this is a reaction to MS encroaching on Valve's business model. While Valve realizes that there are little to no technical reasons why Linux could not be a gaming platform, their reaction to port to Linux isn't altruism. That's a reason to be concerned, but still remain optimistic. |

I wouldn't agree that it probably means nothing for linux users, even if they don't play games. Sine Valve has been working with Intel to improve the Intel graphics driver, and they have reported bugs for the proprietary drivers. So even if they pulled their support now, we have all benefited from their foray into linux land. |
